The first hydrogen vessel around the world - Energy Observer Pierre Alain Varreon
A legendary vessel
Built in Canada in 1983 by naval architect Nigel Irens, under the supervision of navigator Mike Birch, it is the maxi-catamaran that decisively marked the evolution of multihulls. Named Formula TAG, for 'Avant-garde engineering', it is the first sailboat to cross the sybmolic bar of 500 miles in 24 hours in 1984, and then win the Monaco - New York race in 1985. But it is is under the Enza New Zealand name that it experience its best years, by notably winning the Jules Verne trophy in 1994.

Originally 24,38 metres long, it has been extended four times, and now measures up to 30,5 metres long and 12,80 metres wide. After a lengthy competitive career under the names, FOrmula TAG, TAG Heuer, Enza New Zealand, Royal and SunAlliance, Team Legato or Daedaleus it is now getting ready to return as Energy Observer and open a new path: that of autonomous navigation powered by hydrogen.

The first hydrogen vessel around the world
Energy Observer is the first self-sufficient energy vessel with zero greenhouse gas emissions or fine particles. It is powered by hydrogen and renewable enrgies, thanks to energy coupling. The project's innovative strength lies in combining energies: 3 different types of photovoltaic panels, 2 verticlas axis wind turbines, 1 traction kite, and 2 reversible electric motors for hydrogenation, all of which allow us to create and store our own hydrogen produced on board from seawater. Our vision of the future consists in drawing our energy from nature without damaging it and without wasting it. Through Energy Observer we want to share this vision throughout the world.

An Odyssey for the future
This vessel will carry out a six year odyssey in 50 countries and 101 ports of call, to meet the individuals dedicated to creating tomorrow's world. It will stop in economically booming cities, threatened ecosystems, nature reserves protected by UNESCO and large international events.

This world tour's purpose will be to connect together and highlight innovative solutions for a cleaner future.
