Gold Coast Ocean Terminal Group refocuses on casino plan

The group behind a failed $2bn plan to build a controversial ocean terminal on the southern Gold Coast says it still wants to build a casino on the site.

Premier Campbell Newman this week announced the Queensland Government would not support the ocean terminal at Bilinga in the wake of mounting community pressure.

Billionaire developer Bob Ell's Leda Group was behind the bid, which faced vocal opposition and regular protests from surfers, environmentalists and community groups.

The Gold Coast Ocean Terminal (GCOT) issued a statement last Friday in relation to Premier Campbell Newman's decision to scrap plans to build a Cruise Ship Terminal at Kirra Beach.

'The Gold Coast Ocean Terminal respects the Premier's decision to rule out a cruise ship terminal at Kirra Beach,' it said. 'GCOT will now cancel its plans for a cruise ship terminal nearly two kilometres north at Bilinga. GCOT has today still lodge plans for a multi-billion integrated tourism resort and casino on the site.

'GCOT will also still invest in building a new world-leading sand bypass outlet, which will help recreate the old world-famous Kirra surf break, create new breaks at Bilinga and nourish northern beaches. This approach is backed by a 2007 scientific study, supported by local politicians, the surf industry, Gold Coast City Council and academia.'

The government is still considering a cruise ship terminal proposal at Broadwater, which has been met with similar levels of community opposition.

GCOT will now vie against other developers for one of two regional casino licences the government will offer in Queensland, with a third earmarked for Brisbane.
