Sharp shooter has SCIBS in his sights
by Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show on 12 May 2014
Exhibitors and visitors to the 2014 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show can look forward to a creative new perspective from every vantage point, still, film, aerial and virtual, through the lens of talented photographer, Dean West.
Dean West - working with SCIBS in 2014 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show http://www.sanctuarycoveboatshow.com.au/
Described as 'one of the world’s best emerging photographers' (After Capture Magazine) and among the 100 top emerging photographers in Saatchi & Saatchi’s 2008, collection, Dean is highly awarded and in demand internationally.
Known for the 'hyper-realism' of his images, Dean is looking forward to returning to Australia with his gig at SCIBS, capturing the colour, atmosphere, range of yachts and diversity of the people who make it a world-class event.
'I’m excited to see the buzz of the show and the grandeur of the yachts. I’m hoping to capture the spirit of the boating experience through surreal imagery.'
Dean was born in Gunnedah and cultivated his love of photography in his superbly equipped high school darkroom, honing his skills at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University in Brisbane. He graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Photography with majors in visual culture and advertising then formed the partnership, Berg+West, which won nationwide acclaim as a high-end photography and post-production studio working with high-profile national and international clients.
After a stint in Canada, Dean now calls New York home, drawn to the Big Apple’s profusion of commercial opportunities, appetite for the avant garde and reputation as a creative powerhouse.
'New York is the centre of the world when it comes to the arts,' explains Dean. 'Every day there’s an event, show, exhibition that you do not want to miss. I find this incredibly stimulating as an artist. My commercial agency, Cake Factory is based here as well so it made sense that this is where I settled down.'
Dean’s work spans the gamut of subjects and has been featured in top photography magazines, art galleries, private collection and advertising and editorial campaigns.
One of his career highlights was his first exhibition, 'In Pieces' which took place in the epicentre of cool, Soho.
In 2010, he won first place in the international competition, the IV International Laguna Arte Prize for his piece 'Fabricate One'. Dean was praised for his 'conceptual, stylized photography . . . bordering on the surreal, with layers of complexity'.
At this year’s SCIBS, Dean will work with organisers to a dual brief of documenting the tangible products, people and place hosting the show, as well as capturing the essence of the quintessentially Queensland lifestyle and the vibe of this unique celebration of boating.
'Dean will be an asset to the boat show and exhibitors,' says Johan Hasser, Head of Events, Mulpha Sanctuary Cove. 'I have worked with Dean on a number of campaigns and he always adds a mercurial touch to a project. He has a way of shooting not just the scene, but the sensory elements that contribute to the experience.
'We will be adding his images to our website during and after the show to convey what makes SCIBS unique. His images will bring a new dimension to our coverage and enhance our branding and promotion for 2015.'
