The BIAV is reminding boaters to heed safety messages with the warning: 'Don’t Let History Repeat – Be Safe on the Water this Summer!'

The Boating Industry Association of Victoria (BIAV) has welcomed the arrival of summer weather and encouraged all Victorian boat owners and their families to get out on the water and take advantage of the good weather in a safe and responsible manner.

BIAV President Paul Benjamin took the opportunity to remind Victorians about the importance of boating safety.

'The summer weather has been quite elusive this year and it’s fantastic to have some warm weather and great boating conditions ahead of us. With the favourable weather there will be more people on the water and I encourage all those involved to make sure safety is front of mind' Mr Benjamin said.

'Lessons from tragic boating fatalities at Point Cook on Port Phillip Bay in January need to be heeded by all boaters. In 1949, a sudden change in weather at Point Cook caused an unfortunate boating fatality, and 65 years later we saw exactly the same type of incident occur, for the same reason, and on the same day of the month.

'Don’t let history keep repeating itself' said Mr Benjamin, after a spate of recent boating incidents during the first good weather weekend of the summer.

The BIAV recommends those out on the water follow these safety tips:
* Always plan your boating trip including checking the weather conditions constantly
* Have a 50 point boat safety check with your local BIA dealer
* Be responsible – you’re the skipper, you’re responsible
* Make sure everyone is wearing life jackets when required and that all safety equipment is valid and operational before you go boating
* Boating and alcohol don’t mix

The importance of safety on the water for all users should never be underestimated, said Minister for Ports, David Hodgett as he welcomed a summer boating safety message from the BIAV.

'The BIAV does a tremendous job representing boat owners and the interests and priorities of this sector. They should be commended for taking the opportunity to send out a strong message on safety on the water,' Mr Hodgett said.

'As we approach the middle of summer, and are experiencing extreme weather conditions this week, it is timely for the message of safe and responsible boating to be communicated to all Victorians.

'I urge all boaters to think safety first and heed the important message of the BIAV to be safe on the water this summer. The Victorian Coalition Government and the BIAV are committed to a safe boating community, and safe waterways in Victoria,' Mr Hodgett said.
