Trapped in a 90 degree corner of the lake, wind force 4, large trees right to the waters edge. Una rig single handed, wind switching from one side to the other. Best way to get out?

Depends on wind direction! Presumably an onshore wind roughly bisecting the 90 degrees? Sail for height, not speed and sail the longer leg first. And if all else fails take the rig down and wade/tow up the bank until you get far enough upwind to be able to clear the next headland.

Yes wind blowing into the corner, but then swirling round one way then the other, managed to get out eventually after about ten minutes of rowing with the rudder, first one way hoping to catch a consistent draught, then the other. Finally had to get a tow.Boat was heeling but not getting any drive at all, could only try to get out as was being held right by the bank. No way to get onto the bank. Was hoping someone had a cunning plan to get out.
This was during a race, is propelling allowed? What about the tow ? Edited by 423zero - 17 May 23 at 6:15am |

a) If pinned to the bank then - take a breath calm down - get the boat all set up efficiently - 3/4 board, check rudder clear of weed etc, main sheet clear and no tangles. Wait - if the wind is shifting about a favourable gust will come that will give you an angle to get off - use it but be ready to tack if headed.
b)No propelling or towing allowed in a race - but if 10 minutes behind then depending on club - level of racing most people will not mind. c) How did you get there in first place - avoid!! maybe practice tacking.

A small petrol engine built in would be better, have a screw and a bilge pump.

I wonder if the main wind direction was vertical. In which case, let the boat heel as much as you dare

I think a lot of it was katabatic, hitting the trees then dropping, tremendous force but nothing to give drive.
