As the marine industry grows then so do the number of mergers and even household brand names are not excluded from being gobbled up by a larger fish.

Lewmar, the British winch manufacturer, looks set to be taken over by US firm Lippert Components, Inc. An offer has been made to share holders and the likely result is that Lewmar will change hands. Peter Tierney, Managing Director of Lewmar, commented, "This is an exciting opportunity for Lewmar and represents the best strategic option for Lewmar and its employees. The acquisition fairly reflects Lewmar's current market position and prospects, and as such, Lewmar shareholders should be given the opportunity to realize value from this acquisition."

Fishing is an important segment of the marine industry and for SA anglers who enjoy either the open waters off the coast or prefer our inland waterways, the Adelaide Boat Show promises new vessels, the latest rods, tackle, accessories and loads of technology designed to make your day on the water even more enjoyable. Being South Australia's most comprehensive boating show, open from the 28th to the 30th of June at the Adelaide Convention Centre, the Show is the place to choose and buy your rod and reel combo, as well as fish finders, hard and soft lures, bait buckets, landing nets or even your next boat to go with all your new gear.

At the Melbourne Boat Show, Whittley Marine, Melbourne's traditional family boat builder since 1953, are set to release two new hard top models at the 2019 show being held on the 13-16th of June at the Melbourne Convention Centre. The new models build on customer feedback and market trends, offering a unique Australian-made alternative to similar imported products. The new 'Coast Tourer Edition' models are based on Whittley's award winning SL 22 and SL 25 hulls, and offer a larger rear fishing cockpit area, hard top protection, outboard power and optional lockable sliding cabin door mid ship; ideal for Australian boating conditions.

Fishing boats appear to be getting larger and so do their power units. PowerBoat-World editor, John Curnow, writes about more engineering developments in that area. The Nizpro Marine 450S outboard is particularly impressive. You can read more about it here.

Following the Adelaide and Melbourne Boat Shows, is Sydney and exhibitors are already announcing their new releases. Multihull Solutions will be showcasing one of the world's leading power catamarans at the 2019 Sydney International Boat Show alongside a display of the finest sail catamarans from Fountaine Pajot. The company will be exhibiting the MY 44 by Fountaine Pajot Motor Yachts, which has been awarded a swag of accolades across the world including prestigious title of 2018 European Powerboat of the Year.

New product releases this week include the ICOM GM800. The GM800 offers the latest in GMDSS functionality in a very user-friendly package. The GM800 offers reliable performance for MF/HF Long distance communication and satisfies the SOLAS carriage requirements for a MF/HF Class A DSC radio. It also meets MED 'Wheel Mark' requirements.

From FLIR Systems the recently announced Raymarine Element S, a new series of navigation displays for cruisers and sailors. Building on the success of FLIR's Raymarine Element HV Series with HyperVision sonar, the Element S models feature a superior all-weather display, best-in-class speed, and straightforward operation, while delivering confidence-inspiring GPS navigation to captains who don't want or need the capability or extra expense of sophisticated sonar.

While in the US, ACR Electronics has launched the ACR OLAS (Overboard Location Alert System) product range which includes the ACR OLAS Tag for attachment on your wrist or lifejacket. Addition of affordable Smart Bluetooth Tag and Float-On MOB systems to ACR portfolio enables users to extend their OLAS functionality with innovative Core Base Station and Kill Switch.
