NOAA announces improved recreational data collection directive
by American Sportfishing Association 17 Feb 10:39 PST
Last week, NOAA Administrator Dr. Neil Jacobs announced a new state-led partnership to improve fisheries data collection at the federal level.
This new collaboration, known as the Recreational Angler Partnership Improvement Directive (RAPID), will invite states to co-design a replacement for the imprecise Marine Recreational Information Program (MRIP), which currently guides federal management decisions. ASA recently co-signed a letter in support of the new partnership, which will increase data accuracy and confidence in recreational data and allow for regional flexibility.
NOAA has also announced it will revisit the 2008 vessel speed rule through an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM). The reopening of this rule begins the deregulatory process and will allow for public comment on improvements including the inclusion of private-sector technology solutions.
ASA welcomes these announcements, and we appreciate NOAA's clear commitment to working directly with states, commissions, and stakeholders to build a more transparent and credible recreational data program.
