The Beloved Annual Partnership Brings Free Vessel Safety Checks and Community Education Back to West Marine Stores Nationwide

Fort Lauderdale, FL - Year after year, the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and West Marine come together to bring free boating safety resources directly to communities across the country. What began as a shared commitment to safer waterways has grown into a springtime tradition—one that boaters across the country count on to start their season with confidence and peace of mind.

This year, free Vessel Safety Checks return to select West Marine store locations nationwide from May 14 through May 24, 2026. Conducted by trained U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary vessel examiners, these voluntary checks give boaters a friendly, no-pressure opportunity to confirm their vessel is equipped with the right safety gear and meets federal standards. There are no citations, no penalties—just knowledgeable neighbors helping fellow boaters feel ready and confident before they head out on the water.

"As the Coast Guard advances Force Design 2028, partnerships like the one we've built with West Marine are critical to delivering prevention where it matters," said Michael Plavnicky, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Branch Chief, Recreational Boating Safety Outreach. "Through in-store safety engagement and free Vessel Safety Checks, we're meeting boaters at the point of need—expanding our reach, strengthening maritime safety culture, and reducing risk on the water during National Safe Boating Week and throughout the year."

Beyond the May events, the partnership continues to offer year-round educational programming at West Marine stores nationwide. From navigation fundamentals to seasonal preparedness and emergency response, these expert-led sessions are designed to meet boaters where they are—whether it's their first season on the water or their fiftieth. The programs are free, open to all, and built on the idea that a well-informed boating community is a safer one.

"West Marine is committed to serving as the reliable partner for the safety to boaters when enjoying time on the water," said Paulee Day, Chief Executive Officer for West Marine. "Partnering with the Coast Guard Auxiliary for vessel safety checks at West Marine store enables us to conveniently assist our customers so that they can get back to the water safely and quickly. We are proud to be the place boaters trust when it comes to safety, education, and getting out on the water with confidence."

As this partnership enters another year, the message remains as clear as ever: safe boating isn't a one-time checklist—it's a culture. Together, West Marine and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary are committed to nurturing that culture of safety in every community they serve, one boater at a time.
