The sea can be a generous companion, but also a stern teacher of patience. The protagonists of the 2026 Giro d'Italia Vela learned this the hard way, having to deal with the most classic and feared of maritime pronouncements today, June 7th: "no wind, no race."
The Cattolica stage thus turned into a day of forced suspension, where nature dictated its rules, playing out a sometimes mocking scenario for the competing athletes.
The exhausting wait and the wind's bluff
From the first light of dawn, the race committee took to the water, determined to win at least some of the scheduled races. The judges did their utmost to seize the perfect moment, keeping the crews on tenterhooks and tense with constant warning signals and flags, including the dreaded "intelligence" that postpones the start.
From the shore, the gaze of onlookers and enthusiasts seemed promising, lured by a light ripple on the shore. But the reality, as we know, is a different story out at sea. On the actual race course, Aeolus decided to fold his arms, leaving the boats immobile in a wait as exhausting as it was futile.
The afternoon's mockery and the foil show
As often happens in marine weather dynamics, the mockery was consummated as soon as the "break ranks" was announced. Once everyone returned to land in the early afternoon, as if to spite the racers, a light and pleasant breeze swept over the Cattolica sea.
At that point, having overcome the disappointment of not competing, the athletes didn't need to be told twice: they jumped aboard their Waszp and WingFoils to glide across the water. The result was an impromptu show of free training and relaxing outings, with the spectacular hydrodynamic appendages flying above the water, providing bursts of pure adrenaline for the spectators.
We're back tomorrow: heading for the InShore trials
Nothing is lost, then, but everything is simply postponed. The Giro d'Italia Vela fleet is ready to get back in the game starting tomorrow, once again in the waters of Cattolica, to make up for lost ground in the highly anticipated InShore trials. After all, the competition is still very long and exciting: the Romagna leg is only the second of an extraordinary adventure that began last June 4th from the splendid setting of Venice and promises many more surprises before the final finish line.
