The American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) has announced that 2027 Standards Week will take place January 10-15 at the Drury Plaza Hotel in San Antonio, Texas.
Registration is now open for the week's Project Technical Committee (PTC) meetings, annual meeting and welcome reception. Standards Week brings together marine industry professionals who help develop and maintain ABYC's safety standards for the design, construction, maintenance and repair of boats. Members will review proposed changes, share technical expertise and plan for the future.
Last week, the recreational boating industry came together in Sacramento, California for a marine technology briefing and a demonstration focused on the technologies and fuels that will help shape the future of boating. The event brought together state legislators and regulators, including representatives from the California Air Resources Board, as well as marine manufacturers and industry leaders for an afternoon at the State Capitol followed by on-water demonstrations. The program highlighted the many technologies that can help further reduce emissions from recreational boating while preserving performance, safety, range, and reliability.
On Saturday, the Trump Administration's new 50% tariff kicked in on certain imports from Canada. The tariffs, announced in July, were originally supposed to go into effect on Aug. 19; however, President Trump issued a three-day delay in the implementation as negotiators neared a deal late last week. Those talks broke down late last week, and in response, Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Canada intends to impose retaliatory tariffs starting September 8. At time of press, Canada has not released details of the products subject to its tariffs.
The Wake County Superior Court has ruled in favor of the Coastal Conservation Association of North Carolina and 86 individual citizens in their lawsuit to hold the State accountable for failing to protect North Carolina's coastal fisheries. The Court's 190-page ruling, which followed a six-week trial earlier this year, held the State liable based on "overwhelming evidence" that the State breached its legal obligations to North Carolina citizens. Further proceedings addressing remedies needed to cure the State's management failures and restore North Carolina's once-abundant coastal fisheries are expected to follow.
Continuing a tradition that began 16 years ago, employees at Boston Whaler recently delivered a "Boatload of Backpacks" filled with school supplies and snacks to local elementary schools, helping students and teachers prepare for the start of the 2026 school year. This year's effort brought together employee donations and support from the Boston Whaler Activities Committee to provide essential classroom supplies for four local schools.
