Consumer confidence declined in August, according to The Conference Board, as Americans grew more cautious about the economic outlook, even as their assessment of current conditions improved.

The Consumer Confidence Index fell to 89.4, its lowest level in seven months, while the forward-looking Expectations Index declined 5.8 points to 68.2, moving further below the 80 threshold that has historically been associated with elevated recession risk.

Canada has announced a new round of retaliatory tariffs that are scheduled to take effect on September 8. Of particular relevance to the sportfishing industry, Canada will impose a 50% tariff on U.S.-origin fishing rods.

Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) represented members at the inaugural Manufacturing Workforce Expo at Atlantic Technical College, hosted by the U.S. Small Business Administration and co-hosted by the U.S. Department of Labor and OpenAI. MIASF connected with students and aspiring apprentices, sharing the career pathways, training opportunities and workforce programs available.
