Electric engine takeover, Australian breakfast and Boat Show postponed | DEUTZ acquires Torqeedo DEUTZ | A sign of the times. As governments struggle with the problem of renewable energy the motor industry is already developing electric vehicles.
The boating industry has not been slow to react with hybrid engines being installed in powerboats to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions. With further developments pending DEUTZ AG has acquired Torqeedo GmbH, based near Munich. Torqeedo was founded 12 years ago and now operates in more than 50 countries on five continents.
It has significant expertise in components, software and system integration for electric drives. It is the global market leader and a system solution specialist for integrated electric and hybrid drives for boats. Dr Frank Hiller, Chairman of the Board of Management of DEUTZ AG: “Acquiring Torqeedo will enable us to gain electrical expertise far more quickly than with a stand-alone solution and to electrify our product range where it makes sense from a technical and financial perspective. This will give us a significant advantage in a very fast-moving competitive environment. It also marks the start of our E-DEUTZ strategy, for which Torqeedo will be the catalyst.”
We await developments with interest.
| Australian Breakfast Monaco AIMEX |
A neat way of attracting attention to Australian exhibitors. Superyacht Australia hosted for the second year in a row a true Australian style breakfast in Monaco for over 70 key industry players to promote the magnificent cruising grounds of Australia and the capability of Australian businesses to service the global Superyacht fleet.

A highlight of the breakfast was a performance by talented indigenous Australian entertainers the original YothuYindi band member Wityana and his world-renowned son Yirrmal. Guests were overwhelmed by this traditional welcome which certainly set the scene for the discussions about cruising in Australia. Interest in the South Pacific or Safe Pacific as it is becoming known is extremely high, with the Australian stand at the Monaco show inundated with enquiries about cruising itineraries, refit and marina facilities, and regulations. The breakfast was designed as an education seminar for captains and charter brokers and it clearly is a hot topic as the room at Stars n Bars was packed with representatives from all sectors of the industry.
Back in Australia, The Adelaide On Water Boat Show, that has for the last two years run successfully from Marina Adelaide in Largs North, has been postponed for this year. Improved industry and consumer sentiment resulted in very good product sales at the recent Adelaide Boat Show. As such, many exhibitors cited the need to work through into the important summer months ensuring valued clients have their new products delivered in preparation for the warmer weather. This has resulted in less dealers being able to commit time and resources to the On Water Show.

The Adelaide On Water Boat Show is the only event in South Australia that includes a sizeable large vessel component and the BIA believes that opportunity exists for the event to be repackaged in such a way to continue its success into the future.
