Variety the spice of the marine business world

B&G V20  Luke Reilly
There are a wide variety of subjects in this week's Marine Business World newsletter. New boats, new electronics and new job positions. The marine industry covers a broad spectrum on product innovation, technical advancement and industry changes, and for people involved, “there's never a dull moment”.

Today we reveal the introduction of B&G's new V20, a Class D DSC Approved, NMEA 2000® compatible, VHF marine radio. The V20 features a dot white matrix LCD screen with inverted light mode, four backlit mic buttons and an easier front-mount installation with snap on edge bezels. The V20 has a new Start-up Wizard for easier radio set up, improved scanning features, a ‘'favourites' shortcut for customizing your favourite settings and a My Channels list, enabling users to only scan desired channels. V20 controls are designed for left-hand operation, allowing for right-hand control of the helm.

The view most will see of the GT40 when underway... - Beneteau GT40  John Curnow

John Curnow, boat journo extraordinaire, takes a look at the new Beneteau Gran Turisimo 40 using his own inimitable writing style. In his words “Ever since I saw the Gran Turismo 40 sitting in the pond at last year's Sydney International Boat Show, I just wanted to have a go. Recently, the team at Flagstaff Marine afforded me that very opportunity – grazi '. Just reading the review is enough to want to go for a ride and any owner will not have trouble making friends!

Acceleration is one of the GT40's greatest assets. - Beneteau GT40  John Curnow

In the people department, David Staley has been appointed to Sailing Manager at Middle Harbour Yacht Club. Over the past four years David, recruited from Victoria, has filled the role of Sailing Manager and Principal Race Officer for Royal Brighton Yacht Club, delivering and overseeing over 600 events from dinghy, to one-design keelboat and mixed fleet keelboat events, inclusive of state and national championships. He also developed the Discover Sailing Centre training programs for Tackers, Dinghy, Keelboat and Powerboat.

We are always interested in hearing about new appointments at MBW. People are the life blood of our industry and recognition of their achievements and new job roles is something we are happy to share.

Talking about people, Jamie McPhail, General Manager of Pantaenius Sail and Motor Yacht Insurance and a very experienced sailor and boating industry member talks about the need for boat owners to take responsibility of their craft, especially when given adequate warnings of the an impending cyclone. He discusses the ‘'Formosa' that ended up on Shingley Beach at Abell Point and why it happened.

TC Debbie  Bureau of Meteorology

Finally we give a mention to that great organisation Sail with DisABILITIES and the first eight-week Winds of Change program for 2017 - apparently it was fantastic. Once more, students from Lake Illawarra High School came on board with SWD volunteers.

You can help us run more Winds of Change programs by donating here .

Beneteau GT40 – Two words, one powerful acronym, and a hell of a boat-
John Curnow,
So yes, it is all so very apt with Beneteau's super sleek Gran Turismo 40. Now it is also true that it's made even more so because it was Italian designers Nuvolari and Lenard that gave the vessel her smart looks to match the words from their language. However, reigning supreme over it all is that the craft stays true to the original premise of what the term actually means.... [more]
