Winter starts in Sydney, but blue skies prevail | Maritimo at 2017 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show Promedia | Returning to Sydney after attending the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show in Queensland, the first day of winter began with drastically reduced temperatures, a reminder that June is here, however blue skies prevail. Watching the preliminary rounds of the AC only add to the feeling that I'd rather be in Bermuda than Sydney right now.
Another week of varied stories from the Australian Marine Business World.
| BGR Racing wearing Line 7 in the Brisbane Etchells earlier this year - Line 7 Etchells Australasian Championship 2017 Isla McKechnie |
Iconic Australasian sailing brand Line 7, has announced it has signed on as the naming rights sponsor of the Line 7 Etchells Australasian Championship 2017. The championship, which takes place in June in Mooloolaba, brings together the best Etchells competitors from around Australia and New Zealand to compete in a fleet that usually numbers in the forties. Over the 21 years of the race being held at Mooloolaba, conditions have been changeable and challenging; a perfect match for Line 7's ethos of encouraging sailors to get out on the water and give it heaps.
| TIWAL – High performance inflatable sailing dinghy Melinda Henshaw |
From New Zealand, made in France - The Tiwal story, an inflatable sailing dinghy designed by Marion Excoffon, a French designer, who used to sail with her family on their 30 foot sailboat. When she turned 20, she asked her father whether she could take it by herself and he refused. She told him she would design her own boat and a few years later she showed him the first prototype of the TIWAL. Later, she tried to sell this concept to the big guys in the marine industry. They all turned down the project. So she decided to manufacture the boat by herself and as of today, there are almost 700 TIWALs sailing around the world, 200 of which are in France.
| Captains panel - ASMEX Conference AIMEX © |
The second day of the ASMEX conference closed with a renewed energy in the Australian marine industry crystallised into 14 points by conference chair, Martin Redmayne. The day was dominated by the presentation of the recent economic impact study which clearly demonstrated yachting's impact on the Australian economy at nearly AUD$2 billion and could be a great deal more with appropriate regulation by government of foreign yachts chartering. However, the concepts of collaboration and shared vision were evident as well.
