There's no better place to be in May when the weather behaves, than the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. Mark Jardine, Sail-World's Managing Editor travelled from the UK to catch up with the latest marine offerings at this year's event. This year's SCIBS witnessed a record-breaking display of boats and massive crowds. The beautiful weather made things even better.

Beneteau delivered a fantastic display at the venue. Sailboats on display: Oceanis 30 from Spirit Marine. Outboards on display: Antares 12, Antares 11, Antares 9 (Asia-Pacific Premiere), Antares 8 Fishing from Spirit Marine. Inboards on display: Swift Trawler 41, Gran Turismo 41 from Flagstaff Marine.

From Palm Beach Motor Yachts: over 130 guests gathered at The Grange, InterContinental Sanctuary Cove, for an evening that honoured three decades of craftsmanship, adventure, and community. A moving short film featured testimonials from longtime owners, mentors, and friends, reflecting on the brand's journey and the connections built along the way. The event was a meaningful tribute to the people who have shaped Palm Beach Motor Yachts — and a celebration of all that lies ahead.

Excess have moved forward their designs with the Excess 13 and 14 cruising catamarans, so seeing the Excess 14 at SCIBS was high on the priority list, as well as talking to some exceptional high-performance sailors on board to learn their thoughts. Mark Jardine spoke with Rohan Veal, Micah Lane and Yann Masselot to find out why they enjoy the Excess cats, what stands them apart from existing cruising catamarans on the market, and Yann talks about the 'Excess Tribe' and the training which is becoming ever more important to help people with their first outings on their yacht.

A webinar hosted by the BIA: join the Work Health & Safety Workshop for Boat Shows, Demo Days and On-Water Trials. If you are exhibiting at boat shows, whether large or on a regional scale, hosting demo days, open days, on-water trials or participating in other on-water activations. These are fantastic opportunities to engage customers, showcase products and grow your brand. But they also come with unique Work Health and Safety (WHS) responsibilities that must not be overlooked.

The Boating Industry Association launched the Apprentice of the Year Awards, aimed at recognising the exceptional contributions of apprentices in the marine industry and highlighting the importance of training and career development within the sector. In 2025 the award is open to any current apprentice, or those who have completed formal training within the past 12 months, in the boating and marine industry, and are currently employed in the marine sector.

The Marina Industries Association is excited to announce that registrations for the Marinas26 International Conference and Trade Exhibition are now open! Taking place on 25-26 May 2026, at the Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast, Marinas26 is a must-attend event for marina owners, operators, and suppliers. With 80% of the exhibition space already sold, Marinas26 is set to exceed the record of 384 delegates set at its last event held in Brisbane.

Breaking barriers, one sail at a time: Karen Baldwin, CEO of the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. Listen to Karen's message as she encourages local business and the broader sailing community to support the Making Waves' programs, which aim to empower and enrich the lives of young people impacted by disability or disadvantage.

And last but not least, the yachting industry was shocked and saddened at the untimely passing of Darren (Baz) Williams at the age of 59 after a year-long battle with cancer. In many ways Baz was a very private person and flew under the radar for many, but for those who his path did cross he had a real impact as an absolutely superb boat builder, project manager and yachtsman. Our thoughts got out to his family and friends.
