Topper Open at Shearwater Sailing Club

by Roger Devereux 25 Apr 2005 10:48 PDT 16 April 2005

The Topper fleet at Shearwater welcomed visitors from West Wilts Youth Sailing Association and Bath on Sunday for their annual open meeting.

Local sailor Giles Penfold, normally seen in a laser led race one from start to finish with junior Shearwater member Polly Martin second followed by Claire Carruthers(WWYSA) in third.

After lunch in a fresher breeze Giles sailed a few laps and then retired with sore knees, leaving Polly to take the win and James Thomas (WWYSA) third.

The third race started with all to play for between Polly and Claire. Claire got away to a flying start and led the fleet from start to finish. Polly tangled with another boat and started last. She fought back hard but could only manage second place. Claires lead was too great and James came a creditable third. The final result gave Polly the trophy with Claire second and James third.

For most of these young sailors it was their first attempt at racing and the improvement in skills as the day went on was obvious. The Trophy and prizes were presented by Shearwater commodore Sally Weale.

Overall Results:

1st Polly Martin (SSC & WWYSA)
2nd Claire Carruthers (WWYSA)
3rd James Thomas (WWYSA)
4th Catherine Honor (WWYSA)
5th Callum Jones (WWYSA)
6th Jeremy Lowe (WWYSA)
7th Nicholas Callaghan(WWYSA)
8th Giles Penfold (SSC)
