Christmas Afloat | Owner's Memories
By Caroline Strainig
It’s almost Christmas. And there’s no more perfect place to celebrate the festive season than on the water. Here, some of the Multihull Solutions family of boat owners share their special memories.
Gordon and Louise Fraser
Gordon and Louise live in Brisbane and own a Fountaine Pajot Salina 48, which they called Paikea, a Maori name, in honour of their New Zealand roots.
They love spending time on the water over the festive season, although they usually celebrate Christmas Day itself at home with family and relatives.
However, one Christmas they will never forget even though it is years ago was when they cut the ties with land a little earlier than normal, having Christmas lunch on Paikea in her berth at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron in Manly before setting sail afterwards.
“I will never forget that Christmas on the boat because it was extra-special,” Gordon said.
“There is always a special feeling when you are on the boat – it’s our beach house – but Christmas added another element again. |

The Life of a Live-aboard: Equipped for Comfort
By Brett Campbell for Mysailing.com.au
Living onboard a boat can be as simple or as complicated as you want. All you basically need is a way to make the boat go, a way to stop her and a way to tell where you are.
But, chances are you will need something more if you want to live with any level of comfort. This article will give a quick outline of these four areas.
The driving force
Your sails are your primary propulsion but few cruisers have a direct influence on their sail plans. A decent cruising set of sails made of medium weight dacron should last anywhere between five and ten years. There is a huge difference in sail wardrobes between boats. We carry a storm jib, number 3 jib, furling genoa and a slab-reefed mainsail.
The longest trips we have made double-handed are six crossings of the Ionian Sea, each of around 300 miles. For us that means two nights at sea. In our five years onboard we still have not hoisted the #3 or storm jib in anger.

Taking Delivery in France But Can't Sail? No Issue!
Dreaming of sailing off into the sunset but cannot sail? Caroline Strainig follows a non-sailing couple through the process of taking delivery of their new Lucia 40 sailing catamaran in France.
For most of us, the dream of sailing away into the sunset stems from a long-held love of sailing, but for Michael and Marita Lysaght the sailing part of the equation was a last-minute addition.
Long-time powerboaters, the Sydney couple decided to buy a sailing catamaran when the time came to buy their new dream boat and do some extended cruising. Nor did they let a lack of serious sailing experience deter them from taking delivery of their new Lucia 40 from the Fountaine Pajot factory in France and embarking on an ambitious overseas cruise straight away.
The retired Michael and Marita say the change to sail was for a pragmatic reason as well as the extra element sailing would add to their cruising.
