Straddle Carrier Operations and Maintenance Course Sydney

The Straddle Carrier Operations and Maintenance course is aimed at people working in marine service and boat yards. It instructs them on all facets of straddle carrier/travel lift operations.

Industry professionals have identified key competencies which are vital to the operation and maintenance of a straddle carrier so the operator can use them in the safest and most efficient manner.

This course is based on nationally accredited units of competency designed according to the Australian Qualifications Training Framework (AQTF):

  • MEM11010B Operate Mobile Load Shifting Equipment
  • MEM13014A Apply Principals of Occupational Health and Safety in the Work Environment
  • MEM16006A Organise and Communicate Information
Course Content

This two day course covers one day of theory and one day of practical sessions in the boatyard. Topics covered are:

  • Work, health and safety
  • Maintenance, service checks and pre-start up checks
  • Types of slings and maintaining slings
  • Customer agreements and communication
  • Preparing to lift, positioning slings and lifting
  • Blocking and stabilising
  • Returning vessels to the water
Gain a nationally recognised certificate of attainment

Upon successful completion of the course and assessments, students will receive a MIA Wallet Sized Card and a Nationally Recognised Certificate stating the units of competency completed. They are also entered onto a national database of accredited straddle carrier operators.

To obtain the above, students are required to be present at both days of the course and complete the following assessment materials and activities:

  • Practical session activities and questions
  • Workplace activities and questions
  • Video demonstration carrying out a lift
  • A log book of 20 Lifts
  • A signed declaration from Manager or Supervisor
These materials are to be submitted to MIA within three months of attending the course. Assistance is available to those with reading or writing difficulties.

A Certificate of Participation will be sent to those who do not complete the above requirements within three months.

Prerequisites and Career Pathway

There are no prerequisites for this course, however students should have access to a straddle carrier/travel lift.

MIA Members: $945.50 (incl gst) per person
Non MIA Members: $1230.00 (incl gst) per person

Fee includes: course folder and presentation, resources, morning and afternoon teas, and lunch for two days. Students must find their own accommodation.
