OK North Sails Travellers' Series at Overy Staithe Sailing Club

by Duncan Ellis 18 Jun 2018 03:28 PDT 17 June 2018

The 2018 OK North Sails 2018 Travellers' Series moved to the North Norfolk coast on the 17th June to Overy Staithe Sailing Club. Sailors set their alarms clock early ready to be on the water for 07:45 and to head out to sea following race officer Andy Turner and his team in his committee boat.

Breeze was perfect with a steady Force 3-4 to allow all three races to be sailed out at sea.

Race one got underway and Richard Burton in his borrowed boat took the lead closely followed by Duncan Ellis and Simon Cowood. As the race progressed Burton took charge of the race with Cowood checking the new paint job on his hull on the run putting Tony Woods behind Ellis briefly until Woods also decided he fancied a swim leaving the finishing order as Burton, Ellis and Alex Scholes.

The next race got underway promptly and again Burton took the lead leaving Woods and Cowood fighting it out behind him with Burton taking the gun and Cowood taking 2nd spot and Woods in 3rd.

Burton had now won the day but it would be all down to the final race for everyone else.

Cowood took the initiative and took an early lead in the final race followed by Burton and Ellis. Cowood took the race win with Ellis just pipping Burton at the finish but it was still not enough to catch Cowood overall.

Then it was time to sail back into the harbour and back to shore with 5 knots of tide now rushing out of the entrance which led to some unexpected excitement on the trip home.

Thanks to Andy Turner and his race team at Overy Staithe SC for running the day like clockwork and getting three good races sailed.
