Upgraded Sydney marina receives environmental accreditation

Birkenhead Point Marina in Sydney Harbour celebrated a major AU$3m upgrade and environmental accreditation at a recent function attended by over 150 clients, industry and government officials. The investment in the marina by the owners Mirvac includes the creation of a range of high quality shore side amenities for berth holders and tenants.
The marina has over 200 berths for vessels ranging from 8m to 45m. The marina also provides secure storage and user facilities for kayak, canoe and paddle boarders. A full service fuel station, marina office and kiosk are part of the on-water infrastructure.
Birkenhead Point Marina Manager Phil McGowen CMM welcomed the many guests and officials and thanked Mirvac for the investment in the marina. He also thanked the many long standing berth holders and the marina staff for creating a very positive boating community at the marina.
MIA Executive Officer Colin Bransgrove presented the International Clean Marina certificate and flag to Phil McGowen along with the certificate for Fish Friendly Marina accreditation. Colin said "as well as generating important economic activity within the local community the marina is a growing recreational and social hub on Sydney Harbour." He also complemented the marina staff for their pro-active environmental management and leadership with environmental education.
The Mayor of Canada Bay Council Angelo Tsirekas addressed the gathering and commented on the economic benefits of Birkenhead Point Centre including the marina. He congratulated Phil McGowen on his excellent marina management. He noted the marina's resident seal may be reducing fish numbers but the seals presence was a positive indicator of the priority the marina places on the environment.
