The RS Tera End of Seasons Championship at Draycote Sailing Club last weekend had all the ingredients for a great weekend. A fantastic venue with a well organised support team and a good turnout of 71 helms across the Pro, Sport and Regatta Fleets, and unusually for the Teras at Draycote, a generous helping of force 5/6 winds.
Saturday saw the strongest winds coming from the North, making for freezing temperatures and some tough sailing conditions. Race officer, Richard Pye managed to get three well timed races in with the minimum of delay. Sunday's winds were less savage, meaning another 4 races were done back to back, allowing the second discard to kick in despite the series not being complete.
The Sport Fleet was won my Max Sydenham with a dominant performance across two days, even allowing for a broken mast in race 3 on Sunday
Sport Fleet Results: (top five)
1. Max Sydenham, Dell Quay Sailing Club
2. Tristan Ahlheid, FPSC
3. Toby Hatsell, Middle Nene SC
4. Matthew Rayner, Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club
5. Georgie Stammers, Royal Hospital School
In the Pro Fleet, the racing was very tight at the top with a number of sailors being able to win in the last race. Oliver Rayner's consistency over both days was undone by the discards leaving him in second place behind Max Steele, who's risk taking in the end paying dividends.
Pro Fleet Results: (top five)
1. Max Steele, Datchet Water / Welsh Harp
2. Oliver Rayner, Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club
3. Joseph Wawicker, Bough Beech
4. Alice Davis, Great Moor Sailing Club
5. Esme Barraclough, Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club
The Regatta fleet managed to get racing in in spite of the conditions, the 5 race coached series was won by Georgiana Caldecott of Rutland SC.
Some of the real winners of the weekend were the less experienced sailors who face the sometimes arctic conditions with grit and a grin. This was personified by Harriet Wade in the Sport Fleet, Lauren Attwell in the Pro Fleet and Enzo Goodsell in the Regatta Fleet.
The next event will be the Start of Seasons at Northampton SC, 27-28 April 2019. Head over to the website for more information about our fun and friendly class.
