Some 38 boats headed out to the starting area last Sunday for race 5 of Lymington Town Sailing Club's Early Points Series.
With a gentle easterly breeze and a flooding tide, the race officer, David Ellis, assisted by Jo Barriball, set a course suitable for all classes. A slight bias line was laid and the 'planned' course sent the fleets first to 'D' Mark then to West Reach before heading west to Wot Wot Wot 'W' Mark.
On noticing that the windward mark 'D' was being used by keelboats, David decided to lay a moveable mark windward mark. The Class 1 fleet got off to a good start with the F18 leading the fleet, closely followed by Luke and Emma McEwen in their RS800. The Class 2 and 3 fleet start was a little more eventful.
In the end, with the threat of the 'black flag' being used, a RIB was called in to stand off the outer distance mark and spot and offenders on the start. Finally the race got going with just one boat going outside the start line. Pete Barton in the Aero 9 had a smashing start from the port end of the line.
By the time the fleet reached the windward mark Chloe and Ben George were leading the fleet in their Merlin Rocket. Close behind were Becci Wigley and John Cooper also in a Merlin Rocket. Pam and John Martin came third overall in the Seafly.
Racing continues at LTSC with the Wildwind Wednesday Early Points Series race 2 on 17th April. For details of how to participate in the racing, or for information about the Club please contact the LTSC office on 01590 674514.
