The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education and well-being of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced today that it was presented with the Coast Guard's Distinguished Public Service Award. The award, presented by Admiral Charles Ray, Vice Commandant, and Admiral Karl Schultz, Commandant, is given "in recognition of notable services that have greatly contributed to the advancement of the missions and goals of the Coast Guard".

"We are deeply honored to receive the Coast Guard's Distinguished Public Service Award," said Will Jenkins, Coast Guard Foundation Board Chairman. "The recognition that it confers on our Foundation, our people who lead and administer it, and our many thousands of supporters will always be a source of honor, pride and appreciation. The countless examples of dedication, commitment, integrity, service and sacrifice that we routinely see in the men and women of the Coast Guard and their families are truly inspirational. This special award from such a very special organization of patriots, rescuers and guardians is a major highlight in the history of the Coast Guard Foundation."

Aside from the Gold and Silver Life-Saving Medals, the Distinguished Public Service Award is the highest public recognition that the Commandant of the Coast Guard may give. It is given to recognize extraordinary heroism in advancing the Coast Guard's mission, exceptional coordination and/or cooperation in matters pertaining to the Coast Guard's responsibilities, or personal and direct contribution that has a direct bearing on the accomplishment of the Coast Guard's responsibilities to the public.

The award was presented at the Coast Guard Foundation's 15th Annual Tribute to the Coast Guard in our Nation's Capital on June 4 at the National Building Museum. At the event the Foundation recognized its 50th anniversary and showed appreciation for those who have made its work possible.

"Fifty years ago, our founders saw the need for extended support for those who wear the uniform. We continue to build upon that vision and expand our work in ways that impact more Coast Guard members and respond to the expanded and evolving mission of the service," continued Jenkins.
