DAME R&D Excellence in Adversity Award call for entries © METSTRADE

This year, METSTRADE would have proudly celebrated the 30th continuous running of the DAME (Design at METSTRADE) Awards. The reputation of the DAME Awards has been built over decades upon a rigorous process conducted by an international jury of renowned reputation, who meet in Amsterdam to make their final assessments.

Given the many logistical and safety challenges posed by the pandemic, the decision has been taken to defer the 30th event to 2021 and assess a field of entries new to market between 1 September 2019 and 16 November 2021 at that time. But entries are now open for a special one-off DAME competition to be awarded at the virtual METSTRADE Connect event on 10 December 2020. The DAME R&D Excellence in Adversity Award will celebrate the efforts of global equipment manufacturers that have kept design at the forefront of their development efforts during the pandemic challenges of 2020.

Further evidence of the need to continue to communicate with industry members is reflected in the Marine Industries Association's continued use of the virtual classroom. The ongoing social restrictions have halted face-to-face training in the short term across much of the world. In response the MIA developed and conducted the first ever Online Intermediate Marina Management (IMM) course with 17 participants in July. Due to the success of the course the Global Marina Institute (GMI) has endorsed the delivery of a second online IMM in November 2020. The timing will allow marina industry personnel from across the regions from Europe, the Middle East and Asia to undertake the course from their work desks. Participation will ensure that management and operational skills are being enhanced and careers are moving forward.

New products released this week include B&G's Nemesis. "The Power to See, The Sailing Data You Trust, The Way You Want to See It". B&G is excited to announce the launch of Nemesis™, a new generation of intelligent sailing data display offering unparalleled visibility, with complete customization or easy-to-use pre-set multi-function templates and automatic dashboards based on the point of sail. Whether racing or cruising, Nemesis offers sailors the power to see the sailing data they trust when and how they want to see it, no matter what the conditions, providing an intuitive link between their instrument network and the real world.

And as the world looks for ways of reducing carbon emissions, zero emission racing project 'OceansLab' announces the launch of hydrogen fuel cell solutions to accelerate maritime decarbonisation through clean-tech spin-off company, Genevos. The Hydrogen Power Module (HPM) is a marinised plug-and-play solution to achieving zero emissions power for vessels. Water is the only by-product of the HPM, which uses a high-efficiency fuel cell to create electricity through the reaction of hydrogen sourced from renewable energy. Free from toxic greenhouse gases, clean hydrogen has been named by the International Transport Forum as an important fuel for decarbonising maritime trade. What's more, hydrogen created from renewables has been forecast to undercut all other forms of marine fuel by 2030.

Despite a possible continued Queensland border closure Multihull Solutions is expecting strong interest from pre-owned boat buyers at its free Gold Coast Open Day on Saturday 14 November. The special event will coincide with the adjacent Sanctuary Cove Boating Festival and is an excellent opportunity for those looking to purchase a pre-owned multihull with a range of boats on display to cater for all budgets. It is also a great chance for those planning on selling to showcase their boat to qualified buyers at the event, which is conveniently located in the dynamic marine precinct of The Boat Works. The Multihull Solutions Open Day will span the innovate "Out-of-Water" boat show with an array of boats from various leading international brands displayed on the hard.

And FLIR Systems, Inc announced this week its Raymarine brand has collaborated with luxury yacht builder Monte Carlo Yachts to be the first to factory install Raymarine DockSense® Alert on their new yacht, the Monte Carlo MCY 76 Skylounge. DockSense Alert provides the MCY 76 Skylounge with the recreational marine industry's first intelligent object recognition and motion-sensing dock assistant, empowering captains to manoeuvre tight quarters and dock with confidence. Monte Carlo Yachts, the renowned Italian builder of award-winning motor yachts, is focused on delivering bespoke customer experiences with each model.
