North Sails launches game-changing performance clothing collection

by North Sails 31 Mar 2021 06:00 PDT

North Sails is proud to announce the launch of a new range of technical foul weather gear and deck wear designed alongside technical sailing clothing designer, Nigel Musto.

True to the values of the North Sails brand we know and love they set out to make the world's best product bar none. Would you expect anything other than the highest performance and product innovation from the company whose sails have won every America's Cup since 1987?

The North Sails Performance range comprises technically advanced clothing aimed at the performance focused-sailor. Designed and constructed by North Sails' industry experts using the best performing materials and highest quality components, multiple technical clothing lines have been developed to meet the requirements of the world's leading sailors.

Four core ranges of outerwear are being introduced, all constructed in GORE-TEX® PRO - a membrane offering superior durable waterproof and breathable characteristics. Utilising the combined expertise of Nigel Musto and the experience of the North Sails team to innovate and improve on the performance of existing apparel: an Ocean range, an Offshore range, an Inshore range and a GP Aero range have been created. GP Aero epitomizes North Sails innovative thinking, drawing design inspiration from cycling and other high intensity sports rather than traditional sailing clothing.

To compliment the outer-layers North Sails are also launching technical mid-layers, softshells, shirts, pants, shorts, luggage and accessories.

The ranges will also be constructed in a new TightWeave™ face fabric offering a smaller weave to stop water absorption as well as penetration, which will significantly reduce the product's weight versus traditional garments when wet. 4DL™ is a new four-layer durable laminate developed to replace traditional methods of reinforcing areas of clothing subject to abrasion, such as the seat and knee. A laminated reinforcement rather than a heavy, water-absorbent patch sown into the fabric means 4DL™ removes all water absorption in reinforced areas of the garment, thereby reducing weight, the consistently damp bum we all hate and vastly reduces the chances of seams failure, ultimately offering a better performance for the sailor.

As a leading innovator North Sails ethos is to show leadership for a change that must start with all of us. The polyester based styles in the line can be returned at the end of life and will be recycled into yarn for the manufacture of new fabrics, an upcycling process already embodied by North Sails Sustainability Collection.

Ken Read, North Sails President said "For decades the North Sails Team has sailed a lot of miles wearing all sorts of fair and foul weather gear. These new clothing lines incorporate our combined experience with that of one of the most successful technical sailing clothing designers in the world, Nigel Musto. Following extensive testing all of our team are really looking forward to our customers wearing the range we have put together."

Nigel Musto said "Developing this range has been professionally exciting for me. I got to start with a clean sheet of paper and a clear objective to design the best technical sailing clothing on the planet."

"Having the vast resources and experience of all the professional sailors at North Sails has been fantastic. The pool of knowledge available internally and the ability to test ideas quickly and professionally all over the world has resulted in a line of innovative, thoroughly tested and modern product. Other sports had moved ahead of sailing over the past five years in terms of their clothing technology, but North Sails Performance Clothing puts Sailing back at the front of the field."

The full North Sails Performance range is now launched, will be available at selected North Sails Stores, and is available for pre-sale now at Team One Newport.
