FPT Industrial extends its range of stage V compliant marine engines with launch of a new model

by MEPAX Press 22 Apr 2021 03:35 PDT

With a global digital launch called "Marine Virtual Experience", FPT Industrial presented its further extension of the marine engine line-up for pleasure and commercial applications, specifically tuned for meeting the requirements of a wider audience.

The core of the launch was the unveiling of the new C90 170 Stage V dedicated to heavy-duty missions and featuring an optimized fuel map that avoids the need for an urea-based after treatment system. The other highlight was the presentation of the keel cooling system, a solution for effectively cooling engines operating in sandy, muddy and shallow water, without the risk of obstructing the seawater filters and damaging the seawater pumps.

With the latest C90 170 Stage V addition, FPT Industrial further expands its global marine offering, including eight models and power outputs from 85 hp up to 1000 hp, following the overhaul of the marine range, started and implemented since 2020.

This power unit is custom-made for the heaviest-duty commercial missions and offers 170 hp at 2000 rpm and 1105 Nm torque at 1000 rpm engine. Its applications include passenger transport, cargo or floating equipment vessels, pusher tugs, trawl fishing boats and dredgers, mainly operating in rivers and lakes as well as in cities and restricted areas in Europe.

In order to comply with the stringent requirements of the Stage V standard, FPT Industrial took a different route. Instead of relying on urea-based after treatment system, the brand choose to focus on fuel map optimization. The result is a 30% reduction of HC, NOx and PM emission versus the previous version and, moreover, a significant Total Cost of Ownership containment.

The overall high level of sustainability of the new power unit is confirmed also by the adoption of a specific oil retention system that prevents the combustion of valve lubrication oil, with a substantial reduction of visible smoke. The C90 170 Stage V holds type approvals from the main international regulation authorities and enlarges FPT Industrial's Stage V line-up, now including a range of displacements from 4 to 9 litres and offering customers one of the widest choices on the market.

The N40 170 Stage V represented the first step of FPT Industrial marine range expansion. In its standard configuration it is designed to deliver up to 250 hp at 2800 rpm for European recreational boats and in this specific configuration it is compliant with the most severe emission standards, such as the Inland Waterway Vessels (IWV) Stage V.

Pleasure and light commercial applications in the North America and European markets are the target of the N67 450 N engine from the brand. It delivers 450 hp at 3000 rpm and 1305 Nm torque at 1800 rpm. The N67 450 N complies with EPA and IMO emissions regulations and features enhanced cooling and improved injection at cold temperatures. An evolution of FPT's marine NEF family, this engine displays a remarkable versatility, satisfying the power needs of a wide and increasing range of boats and vessels, including the very popular category of cruisers and yachts up to 12 meters, small ferries, army and police boats, search and rescue boats and light fishing boats. Featuring the same technological advancements, this model has been also launched on the European market as N67 170, rated at 170 hp at 2300 rpm and compliant with IWV Stage V.

The second big highlight of FPT Industrial "Marine Virtual Experience" was the presentation of the keel cooling system adopted on the N40 250 E, N67 450 N and N67 570 EVO. Through a complete rethink of the engines' layout, this specific cooling system demonstrates the attention of the brand to the needs of customers operating in brown and shallow waters who want to avoid continuous issues linked to seawater circuits.

Thanks to its position along the keel or incorporated into the hull itself, therefore in constant contact with the water, the system can efficiently transfer heat between coolant and the water, without the need of circulating salt water into the engine.

The major benefits includes protection of the engine from the seawater corrosion, avoidance of continuous seawater filter obstruction, and frequent damages to the seawater impeller. Truckable tug boats, push boats and commercial fishing vessels, operating in brown waters, inland waterways and harbors, will all greatly take great advantage from this system, that can also be used not only for displacement hulls but also for high-performance fishing boats.

The event was the chance for FPT Industrial to show the Cursor X marine configuration concept video. Another element to strengthen the focus of the company on alternative propulsion.

"Do something for tomorrow starting today', this is the spirit that has always driven our brand," says Fabio Rigon, FPT Industrial Vice President Europe. "And that has led us to expand our product portfolio introducing new and sustainable marine engines, together with specific technologies, such as the keel cooling system, aimed at fulfilling the needs of people operating in particular and harsh conditions. This is what we mean when we say that we like to be the best in serving our Customers."

"At FPT one of our mottos is "You speak, we listen" because we want to be close to our customers, providing them the best possible business solution. In addition to that, we leverage on a Customer Centricity strategy by offering services aimed at making our Customers happy and comfortable with us," adds Guglielmo Tummarello, FPT Industrial Marine Segment Director. "FPT Industrial marine products, including the latest ones, are designed and developed to offer the perfect combination of performance, efficiency and reliability."

"We offer customers tailormade solutions for their needs," states Braden Cammauf, Head of FPT Industrial Brand Nafta. "With keel cooling system we are ready to support those who work in sandy, muddy or shallow waters with the most up-to-date and competitive services".
