The Ocean Globe Race (OGR) 2023 is a retro crewed race created as a tribute and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the world's first crewed race around the world, the 1973 Whitbread Race. Itself inspired by the Golden Globe Race of 1968, the first non-stop single-handed race around the world.
The race will leave Europe on September 10, 2023, the 27,000 miles around the world will be covered in four stages with stops in South Africa, Australia and South America before returning to Europe. The sailboats allowed to compete are similar to those used in the 1973 edition and navigation must be done by sextant, guided by the sun and stars using paper maps and even listening to music only on audio cassettes!
The press conference, (in which 9 of the crews already registered in the race will participate, as well as several French sailors who would like to participate in 2023), will present the race, the registered sailors and announce the Race Director.
"We are looking forward to welcoming participants and those interested in the OGR in Les Sables d'Olonne and to introduce our Race Director for the first time," said race organizer and founder Don McIntyre, also organizer of the Golden Globe Race won by Jean-Luc Van den Heede in 2019. "This is our first window of opportunity for an international presentation of the Race in these times of Covid. Organizing a face-to-face press conference no matter the continent is extremely difficult. The press conference can also be followed on OGR Facebook live and by Zoom for Registered journalists from all over the world. "
