The International Superyacht Society recognized Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences on Oct. 27 for its work to conserve and protect global oceans. The Excellence in Improving Yachting award was presented at the society's Design and Leadership Awards Gala in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The award was created by the society to celebrate active stewardship of marine ecosystems. Bigelow Laboratory was unanimously selected as the 2022 winner by the organization's award committee.

"All life on our planet relies on the ocean," said Deborah Bronk, president and CEO of Bigelow Laboratory. "Its health and future are linked to us all, and we're grateful to be recognized for our work to understand, protect, and unlock the potential of this precious resource."

Bigelow Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit research institute located in East Boothbay, Maine. For nearly 50 years, its scientists have conducted research to study the foundation of global ocean health. They have pioneered numerous transformative techniques during that time and continue to be leading experts in their use, including the application of satellites to study the ocean and the use of genetic tools to study single-celled organisms.

From the study of microscopic life that forms the base of food webs to global ocean processes that shape our society, Bigelow Laboratory scientists conduct research in every ocean to make fundamental discoveries, create solutions to global challenges, and inspire students and leaders.

"We simply cannot continue to sleepwalk through the negative impact that humanity is having on delicate marine ecosystems around the globe," said Paris Baloumis, group marketing director at Oceanco, which sponsored the award. "Oceanco strongly supports the work that organizations such as Bigelow Laboratory undertake to improve life on Earth by learning from the secrets hidden beneath the waves, while also respecting and preserving marine species wherever possible."

Through the Excellence in Improving Yachting award, the International Superyacht Society seeks to recognize those who work to conserve and rejuvenate the ocean. It honors the people who strive to ensure generations to come will be able to continue to enjoy and benefit from the sea.

Bronk said that, as a nonprofit research institute, community recognition and support is essential to the work of Bigelow Laboratory.

"The ocean is vital to lives and economies around the globe, but it also holds a special place in the hearts of many," Bronk said. "Our work - and the future of this planet - depends on those people. Their voices and their generous support of our mission are critical to turning the tide on global challenges and unlocking the incredible opportunities our science reveals in the ocean."
