The Mallorcan hotel chain and the world's leading Olympic-class regatta have signed a two-year agreement based on the shared values of respect for the sea and a commitment to sustainability.
The Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca welcomes Iberostar Hotels & Resorts as main sponsor from its 52nd edition. It is excellent news for the Olympic class regatta that will open the Sailing World Cup 2023 calendar from 29th March to 8th April. Iberostar joined the Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca as a sponsor in 2015 and has been providing invaluable support for eight years, first as title sponsor until 2020 and then as a partner until stepping up their involvement from this upcoming edition of the regatta.
"The return of Iberostar as title sponsor is excellent news for the Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca," enthuses Javier Zaynoun, director of the event. "Iberostar is a multinational company but they retain deep Mallorcan roots, just like the Princesa Sofia regatta, which was also born on the island but has become a fully international event, attracting sailors from more than 60 countries year after year. In addition, both Iberostar and the Princesa Sofia fully share our love and respect for the sea, a common commitment that is confirmed day by day by the actions of both of us".
"We are very excited to accompany the Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca for another year, with whom we share such important values as our passion for the oceans and care for the environment and the people around us. Sport and its professional performance also entail a series of added virtues such as effort, hard work and the desire to excel, which are also common to Iberostar's way of working, its identity and its way of always seeking and offering the best experience anywhere in the world," says Gloria Fluxà, Vice President & Chief Sustainability Officer of the Iberostar Group.
Iberostar and its commitment to responsible tourism
The Iberostar Group has become an international benchmark by promoting a responsible tourism business model that focuses on caring for people and the environment. The company is moving forward with its own Agenda 2030 for sustainability focused on the circular economy and with the goal of being waste-free and carbon neutral by 2030. In addition, they will be 100% responsible in their seafood supply chain by 2025 and are also committed to improving the health of the ecosystems surrounding their hotels, among other goals.
The Wave of Change movement, born in 2017, reflects this specific commitment of the company to the environment and the oceans, and the effort to share it with society as a whole. The Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca incorporated Wave of Change into its sustainability programme and this year it will once again actively participate by including specific activities in the event's social programme. In the words of Zaynoun: "The sailors are the main ambassadors for looking after the ocean and being able to link them with a brand like Iberostar is very important because of its status as an example of sustainability at a global level".
The 52 Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía Mallorca by Iberostar is the first qualifying event for the Sailing World Cup 2023 and will be held from 29th March to 8th April under the joint organisation of the Club Nàutic S'Arenal, the Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa, the Real Club Náutico de Palma, the Real Federación Española de Vela and the Federación Balear de Vela, with the support of World Sailing and the main Balearic public institutions.
