Classes racing at Kiel Week 2023

Eight Olympic disciplines, 11 international boat classes, 5 different formats, multihull (only eel regatta, ORC and Yardstick each double handed and fully crewed)

Boats

  • 1,403 boats entered plus 213 support boats (trainers/coaches)
  • 181 in the 29er Euro Cup is strongest class
  • 135 in ILCA 7 strongest Olympic discipline, 120/130 max so there is a short waiting list
  • 163 in ILCA 6 (open), second strongest international class, increased to 180max
  • 204 yachts at the eel regatta (all ratings), 38 ORC Kiel Cup, 301 sea sails in total

Nations

52 nations from all continents from Argentina, Aruba and Australia to Hong Kong, India, Morocco and South Africa to Ukraine, USA and Cyprus

807 start for Germany, Denmark (62), Sweden(56) and Italy (50) strongest foreign nations followed by Poland (46), Norway(45) and the Netherlands (44)

Courses

  • 8 race courses (incl. Alpha=lake course)
  • 251 races (apart from sea regattas) planned, 17 each for iQ-Foil, probably morelike 350 starts because different fleet colours
  • 4 offshore sailing competitions (Aalregatta, Kiel Cup, Senate Prize and Silver Ribbon) with
  • 49 planned race starts (18 Eel, 27 Kiel Cup and 6 Senate Prize and SilverRibbon)

Approx. 350 volunteer helpers

Are supplied by premium partner REWE with 2,700 packed lunches, e.g. each with2 rolls (= ~200 kg flour) and the fruits of three to four large apple trees. ViO supplies around 10,000 half liters of soft drinks for participants and volunteers - of course in returnable bottles and saves the environment up to500 kilograms of plastic waste, depending on the container.

The sustainability at Kiel Week is apparent as well as there are no paper printouts. Posting of results and printout service for participants, media, etc. Protest notices from the jury, etc. cost several boxes, about half a pallet full of printer paper. This is now only digital.

The fastest tracked sailor in 2022 was iQ-Foiler Fabian Wolf. The foiling windsurfer from Kiel managed 28.3 knots.Alisa Engelmann from the Württemberg Yacht Club, fourth in the women's category, reached 24.2 knots. The fastest tracked person was the Brit Timothy Rogers at 34.4 knots on a Musto Skiff but this was most likely being toward by a powerful motorboat.

The web-based sailing app KiWo.app from Accenture, the "digital flagpole" with results service, protest info, weather forecast and much more. a. m. recorded around 15,000 hits in 2022. This year there will be a push notifications for the first time.
