US Sailing has announced the addition of Phil Muller as Youth Performance Manager, bolstering the organization's capabilities in this important area of growth. The position is a new role at US Sailing, deepening US Sailing's expansion in coaching and youth performance.
"I am thrilled to welcome Phil to the US Sailing family," said Alan Ostfield, CEO of US Sailing. "Muller has significant experience in growing the sport and developing sailors at all levels, which are important areas of focus as we continue our work to reshape US Sailing to enhance the service and connection we provide to members and the sport."
Muller brings a wealth of experience to the Youth Performance Manager role, having served as a coach of the USA Team for the Youth Sailing World Championship in 2018, 2019, and 2022. Muller is the founder of the 2NINER high performance sailing team and the Skiff Generation regatta series and was named US Sailing Development Coach of the Year in 2020. Muller is currently a member of the coaching staff for New York Yacht Club's American Magic's Youth and Women's America's Cup Teams.
As Youth Performance Manager, Muller will be responsible for assisting athletes in the Under-19 (U19) age group with the transition into performance sailing, achieving success in competition, and developing skills and experience that will enable a greater connection to the Olympic movement and future success. This includes working with sailors, coaches, clubs, and class associations to support the health of the U19 "Performance" level of the Youth Performance Pathway, with an emphasis on the Performance (Youth Worlds) boat classes.
"I'm excited to take on this new position and to help shape the future of high-performance sailing in the US," said Phil Muller. "We have great talent in this country and there are so many passionate supporters of youth sailing. I want our program to be a resource for coaches who want to push themselves further in this sport. I am a coach. I know what's at stake. In this role, I hope to bring people together so we can lift each other up."
