Just a little more than a week and counting as many thousands of leading marine professionals prepare to meet at the world's largest gathering of leisure marine industry businesses on Wednesday 15 to Friday 17 November in Amsterdam.
"It's a special edition for us in so many ways," says METSTRADE director Niels Klarenbeek. "We are celebrating our 35th anniversary by launching two new pavilions to stimulate interest in foiling and start-up businesses, reflecting the industry's need to innovate. We're stimulating accessibility and inclusion by placing a new Career Zone right in the heart of our Young Professionals Club, and holding our second Women in the Marine Industry International Event.
"Plus, as you have come to expect of METSTRADE, we have an array of features and events to share best practices and stimulate debate on the passion we share to create a sustainable marine sector. This includes a Next Generation Propulsion Zone for the first time."
More than 1,500 exhibitors from 53 countries will be present in 11 halls, 240 of them new to METSTRADE this year. Visitors will also be able to explore the collective endeavours of 29 national pavilions representing 19 countries - including newcomer Croatia - and engage with marine industry associations to be signposted to local expertise.
At the same time the Yacht Racing Forum 2024 will take place in Amsterdam alongside METSTRADE and will be the opportunity for companies involved in yacht racing to discuss the future of the sport, discover the latest technologies and do business. Meet next week in Amsterdam to discuss your participation! A new format designed to bring together all those involved in the competitive sailing industry, and generate business opportunities for all participants.
Founded in 2008, the Yacht Racing Forum reassembles the sports' leading personalities from all over the world. It is the place where the future of the sport is being discussed, where the most innovative technologies are presented, and where commercial agreements are often concluded.
As we approach summer it always prudent to remind ourselves of sea safety. Marine Rescue NSW volunteers across the state were involved in a record 386 search and rescue missions in October making it the Service's busiest ever start to a boating season, which runs from 1 October to 25 April. The previous busiest October for Marine Rescue NSW was in 2020 when crews completed 376 missions.
Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Alex Barrell said just over a quarter of responses last month were for emergency situations. "During October, our volunteers responded to 101 emergencies including seven MAYDAY calls, almost a dozen medical emergencies, capsized vessels and search and rescue missions for missing people," Commissioner Barrell said.
Mark Jardine, Managing Editor of Sail-World, recently held an interview with Michaela Claes, Operations Manager at Pantaenius Australia. Pantaenius is one of the world's leading providers of boat and yacht insurance solutions. Founded 1899 in Hamburg, Germany, the company made a name for itself in marine and transport insurance and has grown internationally since to become the global success story that it is now. Mark asked Michaela about the growth in Oceania.
Further news of propulsion advances: VETUS, creator of complete onboard boat systems, has announced that approval has now been granted to use Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) on its D and M-Line series of marine diesel engines. The approval and certification follow an intense period of bench and field tests.
HVO, also known as renewable diesel or green diesel, is a diesel-like fuel that can be produced without fossil resources. This lower-carbon fuel is a more sustainable alternative to diesel and contains low sulphur and aromatics. HVO is derived from a variety of lipid sources, the most common including vegetable oil, tallow, or used cooking oil.
The use of renewable fuels such as HVO substantially decreases exhaust emissions by up to 90% in CO2, CO, HC, NOx, and PM. HVO burns more cleanly than first generation biodiesel or mineral diesel. In addition, due to its good oxidation stability, it is not prone to bacterial growth.
New boats this week: At the Düsseldorf boat show 2024, held from January 20th to 28th in Germany, the Excess team will announce the name and showcase the first 3D images of the latest addition to the Excess tribe. This new catamaran model falls between the Excess 11 and the Excess 14, perfectly embodying the bold and assertive spirit of the brand. To tackle this challenge, a new team of architectural and design visionaries was selected, including Lombard (MLYDG) for naval architecture and Jean Marc Piaton for interior design.

Industry people: Nicolas Retailleau has been appointed Chief Financial Officer of Groupe Beneteau, effective November 1, succeeding Bruno Thivoyon, currently Chief Executive Officer of the Group and Boating Solutions division. Nicolas Retailleau joined Groupe Beneteau in September 2022 as CFO of the Boat division. With over 20 years' experience in Finance Management, he has worked in various business segments and countries, for the Valeo, Galeries Lafayette and Tarkett Groups.
