Following its 50th anniversary in 2023, MDL Marinas confirmed it will be investing £7m across its network of UK marinas for 2023/24, with £1.3m being allocated for significant upgrades to its Torquay Marina in Devon, UK.

"It's essential for us to continue to invest in our infrastructure: dredging, pontoons, quay walls and berth holder facilities, because the quality of customers' experience is important to us," says Michael Glanville, Managing Director of MDL Marinas.

"For this financial year alone, we are investing £7m across our network of UK marinas, with another £30m planned over the next five years."

The proposed investment will see two of the Devon-based marina's largest pontoons being upgraded, as well as installation of a new visitors' pontoon to support the popularity of the marina as a holiday destination for visiting yacht and motorboat owners.

Commencing this month, works will include replacing the majority of the main walkway, as well as replacing sections and re-piling A Pontoon to widen the basins, replacing sections and fingers on the majority of B Pontoon, and re-piling for larger berths which will be able to accommodate boats up to 17.6m.

MDL Marinas is also adding a brand-new visitors' pontoon in order to welcome more visitors and host more events. Alongside the pontoon works, it will be renovating the facilities block, which will include a full refresh and new boiler installation.

Other works undertaken in recent months include a brand-new recycling compound, introducing general waste and recycling bins in line with MDL's green strategy, as well as laying a waterproof membrane and resurfacing works on the car park.

Every year MDL invests in its 19 marinas to ensure a continued positive customer experience. The infusion of capital into Torquay Marina's facilities will offer state-of-the-art infrastructure and modernized dock systems that will guarantee safe access to boats throughout the year, as well as upgraded amenities and wider basins offering increased manoeuvrability; promising a seamless and elevated maritime experience for its regular marine users and visitors alike.

"Whether visible or not, large or small, in money or time, all our investment is made with our customers in mind, so they can enjoy the best experience possible. This has been our ethos over the last 50 years and will help continue to drive our success for the next 50."

The works are scheduled to be completed by the end of March ready for the start of the new boating season.

Torquay Marina

Situated in the heart of the English Riviera, MDL's Torquay Marina is a destination in itself; offering modern facilities and an extensive range of services, including boat brokerage, water sports hire, chandlery supplies and a brand-new upmarket yet casual bar and restaurant, which opened its doors in April 2023. Restaurant Otto serves artisan coffee, brunch and cakes, as well as its award-winning, authentic Neapolitan pizza throughout the day and night. There are also a host of other eateries within a short walk of the harbour serving delicious contemporary cuisine.

Other marina businesses include the Torquay Marina Gifts, offering a wealth of elegant trinkets and quaint novelties, as well as serving up delicious ice cream and fudge. Out on the water, RYA-approved training school Torquay Watersports caters for all levels of experience, as well as offering RIB rides and charters for thrill-seekers and those looking to experience the stunning Devonshire coastline from a different angle. For something a little more sedate, the Western Lady is the perfect way to travel. Operating a service between Brixham, Torquay and River Dart for over 75 years, this charming ferry allows you to sit back, relax and take in the picturesque views across the bay.

Sheltered from the prevailing south-westerly winds, the proximity to the marina and its numerous waterfront bars and restaurants, coupled with fantastic water sports opportunities, makes Torquay an even more appealing place to visit for both on-water and land leisure activities.
