The RYA is seeking applications from mixed teams who would like to represent GBR at the Offshore Double Handed World Championship 2024.

The event will take place in Lorient, France, 24 September-1 October 2024, with national governing bodies invited to nominate one or two teams.

A Notice of Selection has been published by the RYA Racing Department and teams are invited to register their interest by the deadline of 30 April 2024.

Lorient Grand Large, Yacht Club de France and the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) will co-host the event with a charter fleet of Sun Fast 30 One Designs.

Taking place off the coast of Brittany and backed by World Sailing, it will be the first of three editions, moving to Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 2025, and then to a third venue to be confirmed in 2026.

David Graham, World Sailing CEO, said: "Offshore racing is a priority in World Sailing's ambitions to grow the sport globally."

Selection process

The selection committee tasked with finding teams for Great Britain will comprise representatives of the RYA, RORC and UK Double Handed Offshore Series.

The aim is to find sailors with the best prospects of winning medals at this and future Offshore Double Handed World Championships.

Teams must have one male and one female sailor, meet the requirements in the Notice of Race, be eligible to sail for GBR and be members of the RYA.

RYA Keelboat Development Manager Richard Moxey said: "The UK has fantastic double handed offshore sailors, including some really promising young teams. World Sailing's deadline is very tight so we've done our best to make a pragmatic selection process that will fit around sailors' existing commitments."

Indicator events for the selection process will include the RORC Myth of Malham Race starting 4 May 2024 and the RORC De Guingand Bowl Race, 18 May 2024.

It is expected that the RYA, as a Member National Authority of World Sailing, will be invited to enter at least one team for the championship and possibly two.

Read the RYA Notice of Selection and apply by 30 April 2024.
