Stars of world sailing support Dame Ellen MacArthur's cancer charity on fundraising race day

by Scott Wilson 5 Jun 2024 08:42 PDT

Some of the stars of world sailing came out to support young people living through and beyond cancer at the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust's exclusive Brighter Futures Sailing Day fundraising event in May, generously sponsored by Ancasta.

Held at the prestigious Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, a day of fun - and competitive - racing was the perfect way of spreading the charity's message to its supporters.

Along with professional sailors, attendees included some of the charity's partners, volunteers, and people who have been supported by the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust in the past, all of whom took part in some thrilling racing on the Solent.

Christian Kamp, Headsail Trimmer at Team Aqua and part of the day's winning crew, said: "For us it's an honour to have the opportunity to come over here and meet these special people who have gone through what is hell, I think, and come out the other side, and to hear about all the good things the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust has helped them with. We had a great day, some close racing, had a lot of fun. We're happy to do whatever we can to give back."

Racers were welcomed back with ceremonial cannon fire from the Royal Yacht Squadron as each boat crossed the finish line.

The day included a panel session in which volunteers who had previously received support from the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust shared their personal stories with those in attendance on the Royal Yacht Squadron's lawn.

Macy, Emily, Josh, and J spoke passionately about the need to support young people living through and beyond cancer and the profound impact being supported had had on their lives.

Their experience played a vital part in making sure the day's guests understood the transformative difference of post-treatment support.

Tactician at Team Aqua, Cameron Appleton, said: "I had a fantastic team on the day, including Josh, who was telling his story on board. It was just inspirational, it was phenomenal to be a part of it. Listening to their stories, their side of life, the emotion, it is quite impactful."

Along with Ancasta, thanks go to Spinlock and Flying Fish for helping make the day such a success.
