The Boating Industry Association Ltd (BIA) today launched the 2024 Apprentice of the Year Awards, aimed at recognising the exceptional contributions of apprentices to the marine industry and highlighting the importance of training and career development within the sector.

Open to any fourth-year apprentice working with a BIA member company, the awards will feature state-specific recognitions for Queensland, New South Wales, and South Australia, culminating in an overall winner to be announced at the Sydney International Boat Show in August.

BIA CEO Andrew Scott emphasised the significance of these awards, stating, "This annual recognition celebrates the remarkable achievements and contributions of outstanding apprentices in the marine industry. The Award highlights the importance of nurturing and supporting talent for a thriving future in boating.

"The marine sector offers an amazing array of trades and skills for apprentices who are literally the life force of the industry."

The marine industry reported in 2023 a turnover of $9.64 billion and employed more than 32,000 people. With seventy-five per cent being small businesses, employing local workers and supporting local communities, the role apprentices have in the industry's future is vital to ongoing success.

Winners will be honoured with a trophy and certificate, along with a $500 Repco voucher to put towards tools for each State winner, whilst the overall winner will receive a $1000 Repco voucher as well as a trip for two to the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in Tasmania next February, including flights and accommodation.

Nominations are now open and will be evaluated based on their achievements and contributions to their employer, attitude and willingness to learn and contribute to the industry.

Nominations can be submitted via the online form here and must be returned by 8 July 2024.
