The 2024 Superyacht UK (SYUK) Young Designer Competition has once again delivered a thrilling showcase of talent, creativity, and future innovation. Hosted at the Southampton International Boat Show (16-18 September), this year's competition, brought together the next generation of yacht designers to compete for top honours in two categories: the Master's and 2nd / 3rd year divisions.

In collaboration with Sunseeker, Princess, Lami Sports & Events, Thorne Yacht Design, Olesinski, Cockwells, and Oyster, the event concluded on Wednesday, September 18, after two days of intensive effort. The finale featured a dazzling showcase of design ingenuity as the winners were announced on the Foredeck Stage, celebrating those who are set to shape the future of yacht design.

Each of the designers was tasked with designing a 50-meter motor yacht, suitable for family use, that included a scientific and sustainability angle.

In the Master's category, Amel Khsouma emerged victorious, earning a coveted four-week apprenticeship at Sunseeker International. Amel, a graduate of Coventry University in Automotive and Transport Design, captivated the judges with her impressive storytelling and the incorporation of the lifecycle of the boat in her design.

The 2nd/3rd year category was won by Kasper Marriott, who will embark on a one-week apprenticeship at Olesinski (accommodation provided). Kasper's beautiful sketching, eye for detail and his overall presentation made a significant impact on the judging panel.

The competition also recognised two standout runners-up:

  • Runner-up: Jack Pattison who was awarded an apprenticeship with Thorne Yacht Design.
  • Runner-up: Amy-Jane Mealing, securing an apprenticeship at Cockwells Modern & Classic Boatbuilding.

Judge Douglas Hynd from Redman Whiteley Design (RWD), praised the talent on display saying: "The calibre of designs presented this year has been nothing short of exceptional. Each competitor demonstrated a clear passion and commitment to their craft, all their efforts are greatly appreciated, and it has been an honour to watch them answering the brief.

"It is heartening to see the future of the superyacht industry in such capable hands and the creativity and ambition we've seen today truly reflects the best of what British design has to offer."

Commenting on the importance of fostering new talent Michael Beattie, SYUK Manager added: "It's crucial that we continue to nurture and support the next generation of yacht designers. The creativity and innovation demonstrated at this competition shows that the future of our industry is bright. These young designers are not only challenging the conventional but pushing the boundaries of what's possible in yacht design."

Michael also extended his thanks to all the judges who kindly give up their time to contribute and support the competition.

This year's Superyacht UK Young Designer Competition has once again highlighted the incredible talent within the next generation of designers, showcasing fresh perspectives and boundary-pushing concepts that promise an exciting future for the industry.
