From the Ecoracer 30 to the Offshore 35, nlcomp® has evolved from crafting prototypes for inshore racing to introducing the first serial production offshore yacht built within a circular economy framework using sustainable materials.
The company, based in Monfalcone and already renowned for its award-winning innovations, launches this new chapter under its innovative marine brand, Northern Light.
Luca Rosetti, ocean sailor and winner of the 2023 Mini Transat, presented nlcomp's ambitious new project at the Yacht Racing Forum, held as part of the METSTRADE in Amsterdam. As nlcomp® matures from a startup to a full-fledged company, it is entering the market with a groundbreaking project: the first offshore yacht designed and built entirely in Italy, adhering to the principles of the circular economy. The Offshore 35 addresses the growing interest in offshore racing with a vessel ready for international competition, optimized for Mediterranean, Channel, and Atlantic conditions.
Northern Light, NLComp's marine-focused vertical brand, is reimagining the concept of the yacht of the future. Its innovative production process goes beyond using internationally awarded sustainable materials, adopting circular solutions throughout the entire construction cycle-from mold manufacturing to waste management.
The Offshore 35, a 10.35-meter yacht designed by Gianluca Guelfi and Fabio D'Angeli, the masterminds behind the Musa Class 40 that dominated international ocean racing with Ambrogio Beccaria, debuts as Northern Light's flagship. Tailored for Mediterranean offshore racing and optimized for IRC events, the Offshore 35 also caters to those seeking top-tier performance in cruising.
With its scow bow and innovative lines, the Offshore 35 is set to leave a mark, both as a technical benchmark and as a symbol of sustainability. Production of the prototype will begin in January at nlcomp's facility in Friuli Venezia Giulia, with the first launch scheduled for the summer. The yacht will then undergo rigorous testing in Adriatic races, including the Double Handed World Championship in September.
"The Offshore 35 by Northern Light," commented Luca Rosetti, "is inspired by the Class 40 concept and designed to excel in IRC racing while ensuring a fun, fast, and manageable experience for the crew thanks to innovative design and construction methods. This yacht perfectly aligns with my vision of a sailing project. With nlcomp, I share fundamental values for the future of sailing: innovation, research, and sustainability. These are also the core of our collaboration. My Class 40 project, which I've been developing since the end of the 2023 Mini Transat, places research at the center—covering environmental aspects, such as enabling future ocean yachts to collect ecosystem health data, as well as medical and technical innovations, including biomonitoring and biocomposite components. The Offshore 35 is a manifesto of sustainability and a bold message to the entire marine industry."
Fabio Bignolini, CEO of NLComp, added: "We are thrilled with this milestone. Over the past months, we've worked tirelessly to establish a solid foundation for this project, both organizationally and technically. We've also achieved a strategic breakthrough by being the first to obtain ISO 14021 validation for the recyclability of rComposite® from DNV. Building on our numerous international awards, including the World Sailing Technology Award, we're ready to take on this exciting challenge."
nlcomp® and Luca Rosetti have established a close partnership that will continue throughout the Offshore 35's construction, featuring yard visits and project updates to promote their shared mission of making boatbuilding more sustainable.
At METSTRADE in Amsterdam, NLComp also received an Honorable Mention at the prestigious "Boat Builder Awards" for its collaboration with Cantiere del Pardo on the Grand Soleil Blue project, the first yacht built in Italy by a major shipyard using NLComp's rComposite® technology.
