Marina Community Rallies for Annual Clean Up Australia Day event

by Coral Sea Marina Resort 3 Mar 22:16 PST 2 March 2025

Coral Sea Marina hosted its annual Clean Up Australia Day event on Sunday, 2nd March 2025, in partnership with Tangaroa Blue Foundation. An incredible turnout of 61 volunteers from the local community dedicating their morning to collecting litter from local beaches, parks, pathways, and beyond. The collective effort resulted in the removal of an impressive 250.5kg of waste from the Whitsundays environment.

Litter collected was meticulously sorted and recorded in the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) database, ensuring valuable data records which contribute to long-term source reduction programs as well as assisting to identify solutions for the reduction of marine debris.

The Australian Marine Debris Initiative app, managed by Tangaroa Blue Foundation, plays a crucial role in tracking and identifying sources of pollution throughout Australia, which in turn informs future prevention strategies.

"Another great turn out for our Clean Up Australia Day event again this year'' explains Joscelyn O'Keefe, Head of Marketing and Business Development at Coral Sea Marina.

"Clean Up Australia Day is not just about removing litter—it's about fostering awareness and inspiring action to protect our beautiful marine environment for future generations."

As Australia's first Sustainable Tourism Certified marina, Coral Sea Marina is committed to environmental best practice and has implemented a range of initiatives and partnerships with conservation organizations to promote environmental stewardship.

For those looking to make a difference in their daily lives, simple actions such as reducing single-use plastics, participating in community clean-up events, and correctly disposing of waste can have a significant impact. Individuals can also support sustainability by choosing eco-friendly products, educating themselves on local conservation efforts, and encouraging businesses they use to adopt environmentally responsible practices.

Events like this highlight the power of collective action in safeguarding Australia's marine ecosystems," explains Ms O'Keefe, "On behalf of the marina team I would like to extend our gratitude to all those who attended and to the community for their continued support of this important initiative."

Ms O'Keefe concludes, "Every day should be Clean Up Australia Day - it doesn't just need to be on 2 March!"
