What do “Liberation Day” tariffs mean for the boating industry? © National Marine Manufacturers Association

On April 2, President Trump announced a new set of trade actions, including a 10% baseline tariff on all imported goods, effective April 5. Additional tariffs, including some that range up to 34% on Chinese imports, for example, will take effect April 9.

These 'reciprocal' tariffs target countries the administration identified as maintaining higher barriers to U.S. exports. The administration did not impose new tariffs on products such as lumber, copper, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and critical minerals - though some of those items are under Section 232 investigations and could be subject to future tariffs. A 25% tariff on imported automobiles and parts took effect yesterday, in addition to existing tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Manufacturers should promptly review the Administration's Annex II exemption list at an HTS code-level to determine potential tariff relief for specific items like metals and semiconductors.

Meanwhile alliances and expansions continue. Mack Boring & Parts Co, a leading provider of marine and industrial power solutions, is pleased to announce a new partnership with Mercury Marine, a division of Brunswick Corporation (NYSE: BC). As an authorized Mercury Engine Power Center, Mack Boring will now provide comprehensive sales, service, and support for Mercury Marine's innovative line-up of engines.

CMC Marine continues to expand its portfolio of partners and announces a new collaboration with Garmin, one of the world's leading producers of electronic instruments for marine applications. With this new partnership and the agreements signed in recent months with Furuno and Raymarine, an increasingly wide-ranging and all-encompassing services framework is taking shape for captains and crews. The Display, Assistance and Logging Interface (DALI) integrates CMC Marine stabilization and control systems with Garmin multi-function displays.

Seldén Mast is proud to announce the launch of its dedicated online store for the U.S. market. For the first time, sailboat owners across the contiguous United States will have direct access to a comprehensive selection of genuine Seldén spare parts and accessories - all just a few clicks away. The new online platform is designed to serve consumers by offering fast, convenient access to a great part of the Seldén parts catalogue, including many hard-to-find components. It also features detailed information about Seldén's extensive dealer network and will serve as a valuable source of information for both DIY sailors and B2B customers.

New product releases include Flir's new remote-control unit. FLIR, global leader in high-performance marine thermal-imaging systems, announced this week the launch of the new FLIR JCU-4 remote control, offering precision camera control and an elevated, yet simplified user experience. Providing confident control of FLIR marine thermal and visible cameras, the FLIR JCU-4 remote control is designed for FLIR marine cameras and is compatible with the M232, M300, M400/M400XR and M500 series, as well as legacy models.

From the National Marine Representatives Association, the deadline to apply for a NMRA Marine Trades Scholarship has been extended to April 30. Since 2008, NMRA has actively contributed to the future of the marine industry by offering scholarships to students pursuing education in the marine trades. In 2024, four NMRA Scholarships of $1,000 each were awarded to students attending Northwood Technical College, Great Lakes Boat Building School, Lake Careers & Technical Center and IYRS School of Technology & Trades.
