Boating Careers and the Boating Industry Association of Victoria (BIAV) have just signed a new collaboration agreement with the Australian College of Pioneers (ACP) to attract and support international students looking to build a career in the Australian boating industry.

This initiative marks a significant milestone for the marine sector, with ACP becoming the first RTO in Australia to have the MEM40222 Certificate IV in Boating Services on scope for international students. The program's first intake of students is set to commence on April 28th, opening a brand-new talent pipeline for marine employers across the country.

A game-changer for workforce development

Developed specifically to address the marine industry's critical skills shortages, this program will not only provide skilled international workers but will also support domestic onshore students already working within the industry who may currently be enrolled in non-industry related courses.

Dan Brown, Manager Education and Industry Skills at BIAV, said: "This initiative simplifies the process for businesses looking to take on international workers in the boating industry. It provides an immediate solution to workforce shortages, while we continue to work on broader skills development strategies for the sector."

Key program benefits for industry

  • Access to skilled, motivated international workers
  • Tailored training relevant to boat building, repair and maintenance, welding, and marine services.
  • First program of its kind in Australia for the boating sector
  • Work-based training requirement providing 540 hours of unpaid workplace experience
  • Flexible working arrangements (24 hours per week during study, full-time in breaks)
  • Skills assessment pathway post-course, offering a route to Australian permanent residency for graduates
  • Increased retention of skilled workers, with graduates required to stay with their employer for a minimum of 1700 hours during training and a further 2 years for their skills assessment.

Pathway to permanent residency

One of the key features of this program is that international graduates will become eligible to apply for a skills assessment upon completion. This allows them to pursue permanent residency pathways, helping to retain vital marine skills within Australia and providing stability for both students and employers.

Students completing the Cert IV in Boating Services will be equipped to work across a wide range of marine roles, including:

  • Boat Building & Repairs
  • Marine Maintenance
  • Boat Manufacturing & Production
  • Welding & Fabrication
  • Marina & Boatyard Operations
  • Sales & Customer Service Roles
  • Team Leader or Supervisor Positions

A win-win for employers

This program provides a direct solution for marine businesses struggling to find and retain skilled workers — particularly those who already have international student employees in their business. Employers can now enroll these workers into a qualification that directly aligns with their day-to-day job in the marine industry.
