Avikus USA, HD Hyundai's developer of AI-powered navigation and docking solutions, has announced that Sangwon Shin, vice president of recreational marine, will present and participate in educational sessions at three leading marine industry events this fall.

Through appearances at the 2026 NMEA Marine Electronics Conference & Expo, the 66th Genoa International Boat Show and the International BoatBuilders' Exhibition & Conference (IBEX), Shin will focus on the adoption and integration of artificial intelligence across recreational boats and superyachts.

Drawing on lessons from automotive advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), Shin will explain why successful marine applications depend on coordinated integration among AI, sensors, propulsion and steering controls, navigation electronics, user interfaces and the vessel itself. His central message will be that boatbuilders should lead marine ADAS development from the earliest stages of vessel design, collaborating with autonomy experts, propulsion providers and marine electronics manufacturers to create systems tailored to each boat's performance, operating profile and customers.

"AI becomes truly valuable on the water only when it is integrated with the vessel from the start," said Shin. "Boatbuilders understand the vessel, its intended use and how customers interact with it, while companies like Avikus bring specialized expertise in AI, sensor fusion and autonomous navigation. When we work together early, we can deliver marine ADAS that is intuitive, reliable and tailored to the boat. These sessions will focus on how the industry can move from isolated features to a coordinated, vessel-wide approach."

Shin's scheduled appearances include:

  • Tuesday, September 29, 9-10 a.m. CDT - "AI at the Helm: Advancements in Electronics and Autonomous Systems", 2026 NMEA Marine Electronics Conference & Expo. Shin will discuss how Avikus products use AI to interpret sensor inputs, identify nearby objects and support safer, more confident navigation and docking. The technology session will be held in the Windjammer Room at the Hilton Rockwall/Dallas Lakefront in Rockwall, Texas.

  • Friday, October 2 - Artificial Intelligence Program, 66th Genoa International Boat Show. In Genoa, Italy, Shin will examine how AI is redefining superyacht navigation and why boatbuilders should take the initiative in developing and integrating the next generation of intelligent vessel systems.

  • Wednesday, October 7, 3:15-3:45 p.m. EDT - "From Automotive ADAS to Marine ADS: Why Integration Matters", IBEX Education Conference. At the Tampa Convention Center in Tampa, Florida, Shin will explore what the marine industry can learn from automotive ADAS while outlining the vessel-specific integration needed to advance assisted and autonomous boating responsibly.

Shin brings experience in strategic planning, business development and the practical deployment of AI-assisted navigation technology. Before becoming Avikus' vice president of recreational marine, he served as the company's director of strategic planning and business development and helped guide its expansion into recreational boating. He also contributes to industry conversations about emerging marine ADAS technology and safety, including a 2026 American Boat & Yacht Council and U.S. Coast Guard Risk Mitigation Series discussion.
