Consumer confidence declined in August, according to The Conference Board, as Americans grew more cautious about the economic outlook, even as their assessment of current conditions improved.
The Consumer Confidence Index fell to 89.4, its lowest level in seven months, while the forward-looking Expectations Index declined 5.8 points to 68.2, moving further below the 80 threshold that has historically been associated with elevated recession risk.
