Consumer confidence declined modestly in July, reflecting continued caution among Americans even as planned purchases suggest household spending intentions remain resilient.

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index fell 1.4 points to 90.8, below the consensus forecast of 92.4, marking the third consecutive month of softer assessments of current conditions.

U.S. News reports the economy grew at a 1.5% annualized rate in the second quarter, down from 2.1% in the first quarter and below economists' expectations. A widening trade deficit and declining inventories weighed on growth, while consumer spending accelerated 3.2% and business investment in equipment rose 15.2%, driven in part by AI infrastructure investment. The underlying data point to resilient domestic demand despite slower headline economic growth.

Last week, the American Sportfishing Association announced the results of the 2026 Special Report on Fishing. In total, 57 million Americans, roughly 18% of the U.S. population, went fishing in 2025. While up nearly 25% from a decade ago, total participation is down from 57.9 million in 2024 - the first year-over-year decrease since 2021.

The conference brought together marine trade association leaders, boat show producers, and industry representatives from across the United States, along with Boating BC, to network, exchange ideas, and discuss the industry's biggest opportunities and challenges.

Grady-White Boats has announced that owner Eddie Smith is transferring control of the company to a perpetual purpose trust, an ownership model designed to preserve the company's long-standing commitment to employees, customers, dealers and the Greenville community, while directing future profits to charitable causes. Believed to be the first such ownership transition in the recreational marine industry, and the largest U.S. purpose trust established since Patagonia's 2022 transition, the announcement garnered national attention, including coverage in The New York Times.

Scituate Boat Works, one of New England's premier full-service marine dealerships and service centers, has announced it has been appointed an authorized dealer for Bluewater Sportfishing Boats and Honda Marine. After the successful production and delivery of over fifty Nordhavn 41 and 51s, Pacific Asian Enterprises (PAE) has decided to halt production at the Istanbul-based Telgeren & Partners Factory, and retire the two models built there. Both models were extremely well-received, but the decision was mutually agreed upon by both companies after concluding that high inflation rates and a government-manipulated currency made it unpredictable and prohibitively expensive to continue operating in Turkey.

Although mean sea level is generally higher in late summer and early fall, due in part to warmer water temperatures and changing weather patterns, only a few U.S. harbors are likely to see flooding this month. Keep an eye on the warnings in your area.
