New Marina course deals with extreme weather

The Marina Industries Association (MIA) has conducted the inaugural course for marina operators and their staff called Club Marine Extreme Weather Preparedness. The course is aimed at improving the level of preparedness by marinas and marina based boaters prior to extreme weather events. The course was highly rated by the 21 club and marina staff that participated. The half day workshop was conducted at the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club (RPAYC) on Pittwater in Sydney's Northern Beaches. Senior industry leaders Andrew Chapman and Darren Vaux prepared the course content and Andrew Chapman along with Brent McKinnon from Club Marine delivered the inaugural course.
The course draws on learning from marina professionals around the world and from the experiences of Club Marine in its capacity as the largest recreational boat insurer in Australia. While cyclones or hurricanes are given attention through the delivery of case studies there is equal relevance in the course for marinas in all regions given the increasingly frequency of storms and storm cells that deliver extreme wind, wave, surge and hail events.
The interactive course specifically examines different types of weather events and their impacts; infrastructure considerations; development of an Extreme Weather Management Plan; legal considerations and in particular examination of sound berthing agreements and insurance implications.
Suzanne Davies, General Manager at RPAYC participated in the first course and she said: "the course is exactly spot on in terms of the content, messaging and the time. The workbook provided is a fabulous resource for the participants to walk away with and provide additional value for money."
The next Club Marine Extreme Weather Event Course will be held in Perth Western Australia and progressively rolled out across Australia and Asia according to demand. MIA welcomes enquiry from any marina interested in attending or hosting the course. Course details can be found on the MIA website.
