Poralu Marine is proud to announce its involvement in its first marina project in New Zealand. Poralu Marine will remodel and redevelop the floating marina of the Tauranga Marina Society which is located at the North end of Sulphur Point in Tauranga Harbour, Bay of Plenty.
An easy two hour drive from Auckland City, the Bay is one of the fastest-growing regions in New Zealand. Tauranga is recognised as one of New Zealand's finest aquatic recreation areas. The project is being managed by Poralu Marine local staff from Australia, where the company is already well established. By its scale and high standards this renovation will be a prestigious debut for Poralu Marine in New Zealand.
Tauranga Marina, a large scale project between land and sea
Tauranga Marina is a large facility located in one of the most popular resort areas of the North Island of New Zealand. It occupies an area of 150 acres in total, with 33 acres of marina and 16 acres of associated land-based facilities. It is currently hosting 561 fully serviced berths for mono and multi-hulls boats. The project of improving and modernising the current infrastructure was initiated in 2019.
Tauranga Marina Society was looking for a long-term partner to take up the challenge. After a competitive tender process, they resolved to put their trust in the experience and expertise of Poralu Marine. Whilst some land-based works are already under way, the on-water component of the project is planned to commence in the second half of 2020 with the installation of phase one of the floating marina. This will include the installation of a new pier to welcome the largest boats in the marina (up to 24m) and a fuel pontoon.
A bold choice from Tauranga Marina Society
Tauranga Marina Society has taken a bold but well-informed decision for the renovation of its Marina with the Poralu Marine system. Traditional construction methods have been set aside in preference for high quality and robust aluminium frames and Ecostyle® decking which can offer users significant benefits.
Greg Prescott, Marina manager of the Tauranga Marina Society, had several objectives in mind when selecting their partner: "We didn't want to make any mistakes, we are replacing this marina for another 40+ years, and we want to provide the best option to the berth owners of the Tauranga Marina Society".
"Our site visit with the Marina Committee members to visit Woolloomooloo and Cronulla marinas in Sydney, respectively installed 20 and 10+ years ago, definitely convinced us of the durability of the system. The aesthetics did not change over time." He explains.
"We are happy to see that most of the customers who went with Poralu Marine never looked back to what they had before" adds Marie-Alexandra Hegot, who is the Pacific Area Manager.
Like most of the marinas in New Zealand, Tauranga Marina Society is facing an increasing demand for new and larger berths as Tauranga's population of recreational boaters grows. With a long term vision in mind, adding flexibility to the berthing space was a key decision factor for the owners. The final purpose was to find solutions to allow bigger boats - like Catamarans - to berth in the marina, despite the existing layout and space. With a new design and the vast range of Poralu Marine standard products, they optimise the available space and increase the number/size of berths without loss of functionality for the users.
In such circumstances, the challenge of renovating the entire floating infrastructure is to build efficiency in the pontoon replacement process: meaning to achieve the minimum time possible to control the overall replacement cost. With very little lifting and handling equipment, the Poralu Marine system can be pre-assembled on land and on water before being towed to site and connected to piles in fully constructed elements, up to 100m long. This is definitely a strong point with crowded marinas when it comes to boat handling process.
Marie-Alexandra Hegot to add: "We are delighted to enter the New Zealand market with such an iconic marina. It is a real pleasure to partner with a forward-thinking customer, approaching the project looking for better alternatives to what the market currently offers. Tauranga Marina Society definitely intends to be at the vanguard of boating facilities in New Zealand. The Graphite Grey finish is unique and a very good choice to achieve a modern and sharp final look."
Poralu Marine chosen for its sustainable products
New Zealand has put high conservation standards in place, especially for maritime environment. Marina developers are encouraged to safeguard the local ecosystems throughout the life-cycle of their project. Yet, the dismantling of maritime infrastructure can be particularly tedious and harmful. The soaked parts tend to separate when lifted from the water and end up on the seafloor. Poralu Marine offers a more sustainable alternative. The aluminium structures are easy to remove and disassemble. With their high recycling rate, they support the development of a circular economy.
