Green light to careers in marine industry

by Boating Industry Association 19 May 2021 22:59 PDT

The Boating Industry Association joined with TAFE NSW recently to deliver the Green Light Day webinar as a promotion of skills, training, and career opportunities in the marine industry.

BIA and TAFE used the webinar to showcase job opportunities and pathways in an industry that has recorded significant growth over the past year.

Boating has proven to be a standout choice in leisure activity through the pandemic. The combination of no international travel, the staycation phenomenon, flexible work practices and the need to be COVID Safe have seen interest in getting out the water ramp up significantly.

In the marine industry, work skills and lifestyle intermingle, and it can be considerably rewarding to work in and around boats of all shapes and sizes beside and on some of the best waterways in the country. Particularly as the industry is booming right now.

Seventy-five per cent of the boating industry is comprised of diversified small businesses, employing local workers, and supporting local communities in cities and regions alike. These businesses currently have shortages in skilled workers in areas such as marine mechanics and shipwrights and have significant room for growth.

BIA spokesperson Neil Patchett said: "The industry is a diverse and exciting one, so if the idea of working with boats appeals to you, there is no end to the opportunities available.

"Skills and trades in the boating industry open up opportunities nationally and internationally."

In 2020 the industry reported a turnover of $7.95 billion, directly employed more than 25,320 people with more than 10,000 contractors. Seventy-five per cent are in small businesses, employing local workers and supporting local communities.

The webinar with TAFE NSW attracted more than 600 students from 45 schools to the live event and is available on demand at www.bia.org.au/training-jobs/careers along with several video testimonials on pathways including apprenticeships in the industry.
