Awards, ASMEX Conference, Boat Show and new boat launches in May

by Rivergate Marina and Shipyard 14 May 2022 19:30 PDT

First up is the ASMEX Conference, held at Sanctuary Cove on Queensland's Gold Coast, followed by the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, and the following week, the Marinas22 International Conference & Trade Exhibition.

We are proud to be finalists in two categories at this year's Australian Marine Industry Awards, which will be announced at the Gala dinner on Wednesday 18 May at Southport Yacht Club. Rivergate Marina & Shipyard is a finalist in the Commercial Marine Project/Design or Manufacturer of the Year award and the Superyacht Industry Service Provider of the Year categories.

In addition, we are proud to sponsor the Marine Industry Champion for 2022 which recognises an individual's contribution to the success of the Australian marine industry.

We look forward to catching up with industry colleagues, Captains and friends at the annual Rivergate Marina & Shipyard AIMEX VIP Dinner next week. It's always a wonderful evening of shared insight, some tall tales and reinforcing bonds within our industry.

The marina and hardstand are buzzing with visiting vessels, yachts in for refit and repair, and a variety of commercial craft, including the iconic Brisbane City Cats and whale watching and charter yachts.

It's always our pleasure to welcome back the crew of MY Plan B, MY Kokomo II, Stefan racing yacht and SY Antares, among many others.

Rivergate's team of Project Managers are working with owners, Captains and vessel management on several complex refit projects and preparing several Australia-made boats for export.

SCIMITAR - Cutting Edge Cats

Scimitar, the iconic Australian multihull brand which flourished from 1997 to 2012, has been re-imagined and re-engineered by the naval architects and ship builders at Aus Ships Group, based at Rivergate.

The original Scimitar 1010 was the brainchild of two experienced boaters and businessmen, Bryan Bradford and Greg Byth. They took their concept to the esteemed catamaran designer/builder, Peter Brady to bring their ideas to fruition and the first boat entered the water in 1997. That year, it won Australian Boat of the Year and attracted a larger number of orders.

Unique in the marine industry, the Scimitar 1010 Flybridge was the brand's single model, named for its 10.10 metre hull length. Up until 2012 when manufacturing ceased, 65 units of the Scimitar 1010 were built for Australia private and commercial clients, as well as number exported to the US and South Pacific.

Renowned naval architect Tommy Ericson and the team at the newly formed Scimitar Catamarans have modernised and enhanced the 1010, whilst still maintaining the classic look, feel and practicality.

"Having worked in the industry for 25 years, and boated on all manner of boat types, I have always had an appreciation for catamarans," said Tommy. "They offer great stability, an extra-large platform, shallow draft and are very efficient."

The Scimitar 1010 Sedan and Flybridge models will make their official debut at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, 19 to 22 May.

The vessels will be suited to the private and bare boat commercial markets. Several popular Scimitar 1010 power cats currently operate in the Whitsunday charter market.

"They're ideally suited to families and those seeking a stable, safe and very efficient platform with superior seakeeping capabilities.

"They will provide good cruising speeds of 15 to 20 knots, two double cabins and two single bunks, large modern galley and a spacious, unobstructed cockpit for entertaining. Fully-protected propellers and a draft of 1-metre mean that owners can access places normally only available to trailer boats."

Key to the promotion and uptake of the new generation Scimitar is the existing network of owners, and the tremendous goodwill the brand enjoys in boating circles.

"There is a great deal of interest in the new models," said Ericson. "We've had excellent response so far. The brand is well regarded, and former owners have wonderful memories of their Scimitar cruising adventures. It makes sense to ride that wave of positivity and continue the tradition."

Repairs at the Maritime Museum

On-site tenants, Maritime Professional Solutions, M2i Electrical Services and Rivergate, volunteered to replace the dry dock pump at Queensland Maritime Museum.

After the recent weather events, the museum required a few repairs and our team sprang into action to assist with clean-up and installation of a new dry dock pump and motor at no cost to the Maritime Muesuem.

Centrally located beneath the Goodwill Bridge in the South Bank Parklands, the Queensland Maritime Museum plays an important role in the conservation of our state's maritime history and is now open for visitors, Wednesday to Sunday.
