Calling all Seattle boaters! Novice or experienced, hands-on training can help

by BoatUS 19 Jul 2023 15:44 PDT

Nothing boosts confidence aboard your vessel faster than experience. That's why Ahoy Rentals has partnered with the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water to bring powerboat handling courses to Seattle. Whether you've just purchased your first boat, plan to rent a vessel for seasonal outings or you're an experienced boater aiming to refine your skills, on-water training can help you become a safer, more confident boater.

"Fun on the water always begins with safety. Knowing how to operate your vessel, understanding the rules of your local waterways and confidently navigating any situation is part of the boating experience," said Alan Dennison, BoatUS Foundation On-Water Training program supervisor. "These training courses have been designed to provide you with the hands-on experience needed to enjoy your day on the boat."

Courses are each three hours long and priced at $199. They include Introduction to Powerboating, which is great for beginners, as well as Precision Docking & Boat Handling, perfect for boaters looking to improve their skills. Training is held aboard 16-18 foot single-engine vessels that begin at H.C. Henry Pier in front of the Daniels Boiler before heading out from Ahoy Rentals at 901 Fairview Avenue North in South Lake Union. Class size is limited to four students per vessel, ensuring each student gets sufficient time at the helm under the watchful eye of a U.S. Coast Guard-licensed captain. The minimum age to participate is 18 years old. Courses follow the curriculum of the National Safe Boating Council with content conforming to the American National Standard (ANSI) for on-water skills.

There is nothing like experience to support a boater's knowledge - whether it's handling choppy waters, crowded waterways or tight dock spaces. Knowing how to navigate a tricky situation alleviates stress and allows for a fun and safe day on the water. Sign up for a course or learn more at BoatUS.org/Seattle.
