Dangerous conditions Tuesday 9 and Wednesday 10 April

Why

Dangerous conditions are building Tuesday. A ridge of high pressure extends across NSW. A cold front and its associated trough will clip the coastal waters Tuesday and Wednesday while a low deepens well offshore, bringing a burst of vigorous southerly winds together with large and powerful waves and hazardous surf conditions along the coast.

Following this, winds will gradually ease as a new ridge becomes established over southeast Australia during the second half of the week.

Where

On Tuesday on the Sydney and Illawarra coasts there will be seas of 3 to 4 metres and mixed southerly and north easterly swell of 3 metres.

On Wednesday from the Byron coast all the way down to the Illawarra there will be seas of 4 to 5 metres and southerly/south westerly swells of 5 to 6 metres.

BOM is warning that on all these waters conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as crossing bars by boat and rock fishing.

Swell period

Swell period will be short at times, just 5 to 11 seconds.

Check local forecasts to get the latest before you go out on the BOM website at www.bom.gov.au/nsw/forecasts/map.shtml
